Log in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel will lock down Hebron in the occupied West Bank , go house to house and demolish homes after two soldiers were killed at a military checkpoint near the city. The army said two soldiers, Staff Sgt. Ron Yonatan Roytman, 23, and Sgt. Yuval Shai Svilem, 20, were killed and three others were lightly wounded during an attack by Palestinian gunmen.

The attack took place near the Yehuda Junction outside the West Bank city of Hebron. The army said it had prevented a “terror attack against Israeli civilians” and that the two suspects, both Palestinians from Hebron, were armed with an M16 rifle and a handgun. It said the men arrived at an Israeli military position in the morning, triggering an exchange of fire lasting about 20 minutes, after which the gunmen were killed by Israeli troops.

The army said its forces prevented the men from advancing further, where the attack could have resulted in civilian casualties. Netanyahu’s office later said it had instructed security forces to immediately cordon off Hebron and prepare for a full closure of the West Bank, starting Friday. open image in gallery Israeli machinery demolishes a Palestinian house following a shooting attack in Hebron ( Reuters ) During a visit to the attack site on Friday, the prime minister said Israel would retaliate with a sweeping anti-terror operation in the Hebron neighbourhood where the gunmen had resided.

"We will act to destroy this place, to change it completely," Netanyahu said in a statement after the attack. “We will evacuate the residents, we will go house by house, we will also remove the weapons there, and all the terror infrastructure will be dealt with and destroyed.” A Reuters reporter documented Israeli bulldozers beginning to demolish homes in Hebron near the site of the shooting. Local residents said the homes had no connection to the attackers.

Israeli voters will decide next Tuesday whether to grant Netanyahu yet another term in office — or usher in a new era of Israeli politics. The election comes three years after the Hamas -led attacks on Israel that triggered the war in Gaza . Israel’s government has warned of potential attacks by the country’s “enemies” in the lead-up to the election. Netanyahu holds an emergency meeting Netanyahu later met with his Security Cabinet and officials from top military and security agencies in an emergency meeting, blaming Hamas for Friday's attack.

“Our brave soldiers thwarted this attack with courage and determination,” he said, without elaborating on what the planned attack entailed. “I commend them for their actions and wish our wounded a speedy recovery,” he added. open image in gallery The office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it instructed security forces to prepare to fully close all of the West Bank ( AP ) Earlier in the day, Israel’s far-right national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, known for extremist views, said that the attack shows that Israel needs to restrict the Palestinians’ freedom of movement in the West Bank.

He and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, another far-right member of Netanyahu’s Cabinet, both called for Israel’s military to wrest control of the West Bank from the Palestinian Authority, though there was no evidence Friday to suggest the governing body had any ties to the gunmen. “There is no alternative to a comprehensive military campaign in Judea and Samaria to dismantle the Palestinian Authority, collect the weapons, and eliminate the terrorists, exactly as we did in Gaza and Lebanon,” Smotrich wrote on social media.

Following the shooting on Friday, the army said soldiers and Israeli security and intelligence agencies conducted dozens of operations in the West Bank and apprehended dozens of people, including those affiliated with Hamas and Islamic Jihad militant groups. It also said it had located weapons, including M16 rifles and submachine guns. Eyal Zamir, the Israeli army’s chief of staff, said a “large quantity of ammunition was found” in a vehicle used by the gunmen.

“This ammunition was intended to be used in a larger-scale attack,” he added. Palestinian life is ‘impossible,’ says US congressional candidate Closures of the West Bank are becoming more common. It was the fourth time in the past month that Israel had imposed restrictions across the territory, shutting gates and checkpoints connecting Palestinian villages to major roads. Roads in the territory remain open to Israeli drivers, including settlers, who can still travel through the area but may face delays.

U.S. Democratic congressional candidate Brad Lander, who was in the West Bank on Friday, said the Israeli army’s closure following the attack was an example of Israel enforcing an apartheid system on Palestinians. “It’s part of the effort to take more control, to make Palestinian life impossible,” Lander, who was detained by Israeli forces on Wednesday, said in an interview. Yishai Fleisher, and a political candidate for the far-right Otzma Yehudit, or Jewish Power, party, said Israel had the right to defend itself from a “hostile majority.”

The Independent attributes most claims about the shooting to the army and Netanyahu, and reports Reuters' account of the demolitions and residents' denials. But in its own voice it calls the raids that followed "security operations" and describes Hebron's settlers as "Hebron's Jewish community". It ends on a settler spokesman calling Hebron's Palestinians a "hostile majority", with nothing set against him.

  1. Uses the occupation's words

    Serious

“Dozens are arrested in West Bank security operations”

    Why this matters
The subheading, in the outlet's own voice, calls the raids and mass arrests after the shooting "security operations", the Israeli army's own term.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the arrests of dozens of Palestinians as routine, neutral security work rather than raids by an occupying army.
    The context
Other outlets reporting the same day's events describe them as raids. The term "security operations" is the army's label, and the article adopts it without attribution.

    Written straight

Dozens arrested in Israeli raids across the occupied West Bank.

  2. Uses the occupation's words

    Minor

“an international spokesperson for Hebron's Jewish community”

    Why this matters
The Independent describes Yishai Fleisher as speaking for "Hebron's Jewish community", in its own voice, without saying that this community is settlers living in settlements inside a Palestinian city.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes Fleisher speaks for an ordinary local minority community in Hebron, not for settlers in an occupied city.
    The context
The Israelis he represents live in settlements that the ICJ has found illegal under international law. The article never uses the word illegal and never tells the reader the people he speaks for are settlers.

  3. Gives a contested claim the last word

    Minor

““We are tired of the weapons and the brainwashing and incitement that is next door,” he said.”

    Why this matters
The article closes on the settler spokesman describing Hebron's Palestinians as brainwashed and incited, following his claim that Israel must defend itself from a "hostile majority". Nothing follows to answer it.
    The impression it gives
A reader leaves with the settler's picture of Hebron's Palestinians as a hostile, incited population that the demolitions and lockdown defend against.
    The context
The article itself reports that residents said the demolished homes had no link to the attackers, and that there was no evidence of Palestinian Authority ties to the gunmen. Neither point is set against the closing claim.

  4. Headline goes beyond the article

    Minor

“'soldiers killed in West Bank attack'”

    Why this matters
The headline puts "soldiers killed in West Bank attack" in quotation marks, but no one in the article says those words.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the phrase as a quotation from Netanyahu or an official.
    The context
The body gives the deaths through the army's statement in S5 to S7. The quoted phrase is the outlet's own wording, presented as a quotation.
