Log in Israel has ordered its army to prepare for a full closure of the West Bank just hours after Israeli soldiers shot and killed two men who the military said had launched an attack . At least five people were injured, including some critically.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said it instructed security forces to immediately cordon off Hebron and prepare to close the West Bank, starting Friday. Earlier, the army said it had prevented a “terror attack against Israeli civilians” and that the gunmen carried an M16 rifle and a handgun. It did not elaborate on the target of the alleged attack. There was also no word on the identities of the two dead and those injured. The deadly shooting comes as Israeli voters will decide next Tuesday whether to grant Netanyahu yet another term as prime minister, or usher in a new era of Israeli politics.

The article never says the shooting took place at a military checkpoint and was aimed at Israeli troops. Middle East Eye and GB News both reported this. Without it, a reader is left with the army's claim of a "terror attack against Israeli civilians" and Netanyahu's "murdering innocent civilians" as the only picture of what happened.

The article says there was "no word" on who the two dead were. GB News had already reported that Israeli security officials named them as Mohammad Jaaba and Firas Jaaba, both 27 and from Hebron. The article never says they were Palestinian.

The election comes three years after the Hamas -led attacks on Israel that triggered the war in Gaza . Israel’s government has warned of potential attacks by the country’s “enemies” in the lead-up to the election. Netanyahu holds an emergency meeting Following the shooting, Netanyahu held an emergency meeting of his Security Cabinet and officials from top military and security agencies. He blamed Hamas, saying the militant group was “planning a major attack aimed at murdering innocent civilians.”

“Our brave soldiers thwarted this attack with courage and determination," he said, without elaborating on what the planned attack entailed. "I commend them for their actions and wish our wounded a speedy recovery,” he added but did not say if the wounded were soldiers or civilians. The office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it instructed security forces to prepare to fully close all of the West Bank ( AP ) Earlier on Friday, Israel’s far-right national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, known for extremist views , said that the attack shows that Israel needs to restrict the Palestinians’ freedom of movement in the West Bank.

“The lives of the residents of Judea and Samaria, of the settlers, the lives of the soldiers, the lives of the police officers, the lives of our fighters are a million times more important than freedom of movement,” he said, using an Israeli reference to the West Bank. Ahead of the anniversary of the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack that triggered the war, Netanyahu said the Palestinian militant group could attack Israel in a bid to influence the outcome of the elections.

He did not provide evidence to back up the claim. The injured are evacuated to a hospital, medics say Emergency responders said five people were injured, some critically, and were being evacuated to hospitals in Israel. A statement from the responders said gunfire was still ongoing as they arrived at the scene of the attack near the Yehuda Junction in the morning. Two men in their 20s had gunshot wounds to their lower limbs; one was unconscious and seriously injured, the responders said.

“We arrived at a difficult scene while shooting was still taking place in the area," said Tzuriel Edri with the response team. An investigation was underway, authorities said. Also Friday, , including those affiliated with Hamas and Islamic Jihad militant groups. It also said it had located weapons, including M16 rifles and submachine guns.

Closures of the West Bank, such as the one ordered Friday, . It’s the fourth time in the past month that Israel has imposed restrictions across the area, shutting gates and checkpoints connecting Palestinian villages to major roads. Meanwhile, Israeli roads in the territory remain open to Israeli drivers, including settlers, who can still travel through the area but may face delays.

The Independent reports Israel's order to seal off Hebron and prepare a full closure of the West Bank. It never once calls the West Bank occupied, though its own report hours earlier did. It gives only the army's account of the raids that followed, and it leaves out the reports that the shooting was at a military checkpoint, which sits against the army's claim of a 'terror attack against Israeli civilians'. The article does attribute the army's and Netanyahu's claims, and it notes that Netanyahu gave no evidence.

  1. Hedges the documented record

    Serious

“near the city of Hebron on Friday morning”

    Why this matters
The Independent places the shooting "near the city of Hebron" and the closure in "the West Bank" with no word that this is occupied territory. Its own report on the same shooting, hours earlier, said "in the occupied West Bank".
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the West Bank as ordinary Israeli-run territory that Israel can seal off at will, with no legal status that bears on the order.
    The context
The ICJ has found Israel's occupation of the West Bank unlawful. The Independent's own earlier article on this shooting said "occupied West Bank", and the Mirror's report of the same event says "the occupied territory". Here the word is gone.

“are growing more common in the territory”

    Why this matters
The Independent calls the West Bank simply "the territory" in the passage about repeated closures of Palestinian villages. That is the one place where the occupation is the subject of the sentence.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the closures as routine security measures in a place whose status is neutral or unsettled.
    The context
The closures shut gates and checkpoints on Palestinian villages, while the article itself says roads stay open to settlers. That is military rule over an occupied population, under an occupation the ICJ found unlawful, beside settlements it found illegal. The article never names either.

    Written straight

Israeli soldiers shot and killed two men who the military said had launched an attack near the city of Hebron in the occupied West Bank on Friday morning. Closures of the occupied territory, which shut Palestinian villages off from major roads while settlers keep driving, are growing more common.

  2. One side gets the space

    Minor

“the army said soldiers and Israeli security and intelligence agencies conducted dozens of operations in the West Bank and apprehended dozens of people”

    Why this matters
The Independent tells the raids that followed the shooting only in the army's words: "operations" and people "apprehended", some affiliated with armed groups. No Palestinian account of the raids appears. Across the article, Netanyahu, Ben-Gvir, the army and an Israeli medic speak, and no Palestinian does.
    The impression it gives
A reader comes away thinking the raids were orderly arrests of armed group members and nothing more.
    The context
Middle East Eye, publishing before this article, reported that Israeli occupation forces shot and wounded a Palestinian man in Dura and closed the Ibrahimi Mosque. MEE said it had the mosque closure from the Palestinian Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs.
