Liz Truss finally has her say on the lettuce and it's exactly what you'd expect

has finally admitted that she likes lettuce - along with other vegetables as well. The former PM, who famously lost a battle of survival against your Daily Star’s 60p lettuce, was asked directly by Piers Morgan if she liked the salad favourite. The telly host said on his Uncensored show: “First of all, just a question that has always interested me - do you like lettuce? Do you eat lettuce? She replied: “I like all kinds of vegetables, yes.”

But when prompted by Piers if she was "a lettuce fan”, the ex-Tory leader had a sense of humour failure. Watch the full interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored , YouTube She added: “Well, it's just a puerile joke, Piers, isn't it? And what I'm saying in my book is we have a problem in Britain, we have a fundamental problem that our system is broken. "I tried to fix that, unlike most other Prime Ministers, who just go along with what the system wants.

I tried to come in and change it, and I just don't find jokes about it particularly funny." Piers added: “The reason I think it had relevance and longevity is because in the end, you didn't outlive the lettuce.” The interview came at the end of a day when Truss insisted she was barely to blame for the economic chaos that toppled her government – and reckons it wasn’t her job to do her homework. She pointed the finger at the Bank of England and Treasury officials for failing to warn her of the risks.

Asked how much responsibility she took for the turmoil, she declared: “Not very much is the answer. The vast majority of the responsibility lies with the Bank of England.” She's finally let it slip after lettuce-Loathing Liz managed to write an entire book about her downfall without mentioning the leafy vegetable that outlasted her. The former PM's latest literary offering, Bank Job, is a 94-page rant about the people she claims are to blame for her car crash spell in Downing Street.

But there's not a single mention of the Daily Star's world-famous lettuce, which became the symbol of her spectacular wilting. Our trusty 60p iceberg famously outlasted the Tory leader after we challenged it to survive longer than her premiership. And while the lettuce went on to become a global superstar, poor Liz was booted out after just 49 days in Number 10. Now she's back with a book settling old scores, pointing the finger at the Bank of England, civil servants, journalists and even fellow Tories.

But the former PM appears to have developed a severe case of selective memory when it comes to her salad-based humiliation. Critics delivered a savage verdict, branding her attempt to justify her economic policies “preposterous”. They accused her of refusing to accept responsibility for the chaos unleashed by her disastrous mini-budget, which sent financial markets into turmoil. One book boff described her work as “without question the most deranged” he had ever reviewed.

But . She wrote on X: “The establishment attacks on me are getting more and more deranged. I note they are not attacking on the basis of facts and evidence.” One internet wag replied with an AI image reimagining the book cover with the title ‘Nut Job’. Another said: “How do I order zero copies please?” One more branded her a “delusional idiot” while another wrote: “I'm glad to see you don't fall into the trap of overthinking things…” For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletters .

What we found (2)

The Daily Star reports Liz Truss's Piers Morgan interview and her new book in a mocking tabloid register, calling her "Loopy Liz" twice in its own voice. It also paraphrases her as claiming shady figures conspired to bring down her government, when the only quote it prints is a complaint about critics of her book. These are minor problems, and the article quotes her own words on responsibility so a reader can check her position.

  1. Uses a loaded word

    Minor

    “Loopy Liz Truss”

    Why this matters
The Daily Star calls Truss "Loopy" in its own voice in the opening words of the story.
    The impression it gives
A reader is told before any quote appears that the former prime minister is unhinged.
    The context
The article reports an interview and a book. Nothing in it shows anything beyond a contested political argument about blame for the mini-budget.

    Show it in the article

    “Loopy Liz insists”

    Why this matters
The Daily Star repeats the "Loopy Liz" label in its own voice to introduce her response to critics.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes her reply to reviewers as further proof of the label rather than as her stated position.
    The context
What follows is a short post on X about critics. The label is the outlet's verdict, not a fact the article establishes.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“The establishment attacks on me are getting more and more deranged.”

  2. Paraphrase goes beyond the quotes

    Minor

“she was the victim of powerful shady figures who conspired to bring down her government”

    Why this matters
The Daily Star says Truss claims a conspiracy by shady figures brought down her government.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes she alleges a secret plot.
    The context
The only quote offered in support is her post complaining that establishment attacks on her book are "deranged" and not based on evidence. That is a complaint about critics, not a claim of a conspiracy to topple her.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“I note they are not attacking on the basis of facts and evidence.”

    Show it in the article

What it gets right

  • “Asked how much responsibility she took for the turmoil, she declared: “Not very much is the answer.”

It gives Truss's own words on her share of the blame, so a reader can judge her position from what she actually said.
