Iran seeks to ease economic pressure from US sanctions through inflation control, food subsidies

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.1 finding

Iran is seeking to ease economic pressure from US and Western sanctions by slowing inflation and increasing food voucher allowances for households, government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani said Monday. Speaking to Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency, Mohajerani said inflation was rooted in broader macroeconomic conditions and could not be addressed through short-term measures. “We are trying to counter the economic pressure imposed on us by the West and the US by controlling the pace of inflation on the one hand and taking measures to improve people’s livelihoods, including increasing food voucher allowances, on the other,” she said.

The government is seeking to expand its electronic food voucher program, known as Kalabarg, which provides eligible households with subsidies to purchase essential food items. Iran’s economy has faced mounting pressure from US sanctions, currency depreciation and rising consumer prices. Washington launched a new economic pressure campaign, dubbed Operation Economic Outcast, in August, targeting Iran’s oil exports, financial transactions and access to international markets.

The US also restored its naval blockade against vessels traveling to and from Iranian ports in July, further restricting Tehran’s oil trade. Iranian Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati said in August that the country’s oil exports had fallen to zero amid the conflict and sanctions. The International Monetary Fund projected in August that Iran’s economy would contract by 6.1% in 2026, with average annual inflation reaching 68.9%. The economic difficulties have been compounded by , and continuing disagreements over sanctions relief and security arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz.

What we found (1)

Anadolu reports the Iranian government spokeswoman's plan to ease sanctions pressure through inflation control and food vouchers, and attributes her claims and the IMF projections clearly. It names Washington as the author of the sanctions campaign and the naval blockade. Its one lapse is the closing line, which calls the February war a conflict between Iran and the US and leaves out Israel and who launched the attacks, facts Anadolu reported the same day.

    Minor

“the military conflict between Iran and the US, which began in February”

    Why this matters
Anadolu calls the war a "military conflict between Iran and the US" that "began in February". It names no attacker and leaves Israel out.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the war as a two-sided US and Iran conflict that started without a clear initiator, with no Israeli role.
    The context
Anadolu's own report the same day says the US and Israel launched military attacks on Iran in February. This article drops both Israel's part and who started the attacks. This is background to a story about subsidies, so it is minor.

What it gets right

  • “Washington launched a new economic pressure campaign, dubbed Operation Economic Outcast, in August, targeting Iran’s oil exports, financial transactions and access to international markets”

Anadolu names Washington as the actor behind the sanctions campaign in the active voice and says what it targets.

  • “government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani said Monday”

Anadolu attributes the government's claims about its own policy to a named official rather than stating them as fact.

  • “The International Monetary Fund projected in August that Iran’s economy would contract by 6.1% in 2026”

Anadolu gives the economic forecast with its source and date, so the reader knows whose figure it is.
