Iran and Qatar Hold Third Day of Talks as US, Israel Prepare for Potential New Attacks

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.1 finding

Iranian officials were in Doha on Sunday for the third day of talks with Qatari mediators on a potential deal to open the Strait of Hormuz as the US and Israel continue to prepare for renewed attacks on Iran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that Iran was continuing talks with Qatar but that it had no plans for direct talks with US officials. “There has been no meeting with the American delegation, nor has one been planned,” he said.

Araghchi said the talks with Qatar have focused on Iran’s proposal to fully open the Strait of Hormuz within seven days and that Tehran had agreed it could open the waterway within two days, though there’s no sign that the US is willing to agree to Tehran’s conditions. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi (PressTV) Araghchi said that Iran was hoping “there is enough rationality on the other side to prefer diplomacy to other options, but we are fully prepared for other options as well.”

Amid the talks between Qatar and Iran, Israel’s Yedioth Ahronoth reported that Israel had completed its preparations for a renewed confrontation with Iran. Those preparations have included flying aircraft in Iraqi and Syrian airspace toward Iran’s border to rehearse potential attack routes, . The report said that while Israel was prepared to strike Iran, the decision was ultimately up to President Trump, who was recently briefed by Adm.

Brad Cooper, the head of US Central Command, on military options for attacking Iran. The Wall Street Journal reported recently that the US was preparing for a renewed bombing campaign by deploying a Patriot air defense system to Israel and moving other military assets around the region. Trump has signaled that the potential attacks will come after the November 3 US midterm election. While the Trump administration is now suggesting it’s open to some sort of deal with Iran, the US was engaged in negotiations with Tehran both before the June 2025 and the current conflict, which began on February 28 by a US and Israeli sneak attack on the Islamic Republic that included the bombing of an elementary school and the killing of Iran’s supreme leader.

What we found (1)

Antiwar.com reports the third day of Iran-Qatar talks in Doha and US and Israeli preparations for new attacks. It names the US and Israel as the attackers who began the current war and lets the Iranian foreign minister speak for himself. One minor problem remains: in its own voice and without a source, it suggests Israel's rehearsal flights could be meant to provoke Iran.

  1. Guesses at a motive without a source

    Minor

“flights that could be an effort to provoke Iran into responding”

    Why this matters
In its own voice, with no source, the outlet suggests the rehearsal flights may be meant to draw Iran into a response.
    The impression it gives
A reader may take a deliberate provocation as part of the reported preparations.
    The context
The Yedioth Ahronoth report the article cites is credited only with saying the preparations were complete and the decision lay with Trump. No source is given for the provocation reading, and the article hedges it with "could be".

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“Israel had completed its preparations for a renewed confrontation with Iran”

    Show it in the article

What it gets right

  • “began on February 28 by a US and Israeli sneak attack on the Islamic Republic that included the bombing of an elementary school and the killing of Iran’s supreme leader”

It names who started the war and says plainly that the attack bombed a school and killed Iran's supreme leader, in the active voice.

  • “Israel’s Yedioth Ahronoth reported that Israel had completed its preparations”

It credits the claim about Israel's readiness to the newspaper that reported it, rather than stating it as the outlet's own fact.

  • ““There has been no meeting with the American delegation, nor has one been planned,” he said.”

It gives the Iranian foreign minister's account in his own words, so Iran's position is not filtered through US or Israeli officials.
