Support us Chancellor John Healey is expected to freeze the rate of fuel duty in tomorrow's Budget, according to fresh reports. Labour has been under pressure to take action on fuel duty following soaring petrol and diesel prices stemming from the war in the Middle East.

Diesel prices soared to their highest ever level at the start of October, surpassing levels seen in the months following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. As Chancellor in 2022, Rishi Sunak announced a 5p per litre cut to the rate of fuel duty to protect motorists at the pumps from price shocks. TRENDING Stories Videos Your Say The fuel duty freeze has been extended every year since, with reports from The Sun suggesting that Chancellor John Healey will follow suit.

A Treasury source outlined that the Chancellor will show he's on the side of motorists by announcing a freeze during the Budget on Wednesday. They added: "Healey knows motorists have been hit hard by the cost of getting around, especially people who have no choice but to drive for their job. "It's part of the Chancellor’s determination to back motorists, support working people and put more money in their pockets." Chancellor John Healey is set to extend the fuel duty freeze in the Budget tomorrow | PA At present, drivers are paying an average of 173.45p per litre for petrol and 198.86p for diesel, according to data from RAC Fuel Watch.

The organisation expects these prices to fall, although with oil prices soaring to $116 (£87) in the last week, savings could take a while to come into effect. If fuel duty changes are not introduced in the Budget tomorrow, rates will increase by 3p a litre in January 2027, and a further 2p in March. Labour has been under pressure from motoring organisations and businesses around the UK in recent weeks over expensive pump prices. Hauliers in particular have highlighted the huge costs they face when filling up at a more consistent rate than the average driver. Research from the Road Haulage Association suggests that businesses are now paying an extra £385 a week per truck, coach or van compared to March this year. Survation polling for the RHA showed that eight in 10 people were concerned about fuel price rises. The Government first cut the rate of fuel duty after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022 | PA Richard Smith, managing director of the RHA, warned: "A fuel duty hike remains a food price hike.

Everything on a supermarket shelf got there on a lorry or van, so when it costs more to move it, it costs more for us all to buy it. "Wednesday is the last chance for the Chancellor to change course. He can't control the price of fuel, but he can control what the Treasury adds to it." Mr Smith called on the Government to scrap the planned fuel duty rises and provide a rebate of 15p a litre to lorry, van and coach businesses. A HMT spokesperson told GB News: "As has always been the case, decisions on tax are a matter for the Chancellor to set out at fiscal events, and we do not routinely comment on rumour, speculation or proposals."

GB News reports that Chancellor John Healey is expected to freeze fuel duty in the Budget, attributing this to press reports and an unnamed Treasury source, with RAC price data and the Road Haulage Association's demands. The body is careful to call the freeze an expectation and prints the Treasury's refusal to comment. The headline goes further and tells readers drivers have already secured a victory, when nothing has been announced and the hauliers quoted wanted more than a freeze.

  1. Headline goes beyond the article

    Minor

“petrol and diesel drivers secure victory”

    Why this matters
The words "secure victory" tell the reader, in GB News's own voice, that drivers have already won something.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes it that the freeze is settled and that it is the outcome motorists were campaigning for.
    The context
The body reports only that a freeze is expected according to reports, and the Treasury declined to comment on "rumour, speculation or proposals". The Road Haulage Association quoted in the article asked for the planned rises to be scrapped and a 15p a litre rebate, not merely a freeze.

What it gets right

  • “is expected to freeze the rate of fuel duty in tomorrow's Budget, according to fresh reports”

The body attributes the freeze to reports and calls it an expectation rather than stating it as decided.

  • “we do not routinely comment on rumour, speculation or proposals”

It prints the Treasury's on-record refusal to confirm, so readers can see the story rests on an unnamed source.

  • “according to data from RAC Fuel Watch”

It gives the source for the pump price figures it quotes.
