A similar installation depicting Trump behind bars also amused passers-by in the square on October 21. Iran this week also unveiled a huge billboard and banners over Enqelab Square in central Tehran .

The poster depicts the US president behind bars with his head bowed. In English, the billboard pledges: "We will kill Trump". took place just after Trump's historic defeat at the US midterm elections. The article ties the spectacle only to Trump's midterm defeat. It never says that 4 November is the anniversary of the 1979 seizure of the US embassy, which the Tehran rally and posters marked. A reader takes the event as a reaction to the election alone.

The Daily Express reports a staged mock hanging of Donald Trump in Tehran's Tajrish Square and a billboard reading "We will kill Trump", and links them to Trump's midterm defeat. It calls the event "state-organised" in its own voice without giving a source. It never mentions that the day marked the anniversary of the 1979 US embassy seizure, which other outlets reported.

    “The state-organised spectacle”

    Why this matters
The Daily Express calls the mock execution "state-organised" in its own voice and gives no source for who organised it.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes it as established that the Iranian government staged the hanging.
    The context
Elsewhere the article says only that actors performed it as part of a billboard installation and that Iranian media shared the footage. Other coverage attributes the footage to Fars News Agency but does not establish who organised the performance.

What it gets right

  • “the US– Israel war on Iran”

It names who waged the war on Iran rather than writing it as a conflict with no actor.

  • “which could not be independently verified by the Daily Express”

It tells the reader plainly that the footage is unverified.

  • “Ali Nikzad, the first deputy speaker of the parliament, said:”

It attributes the Iranian official's claim to a named person in his own words.
