Left out here: Leaves out what changes the picture

The article never says that the Energy Secretary herself said Jackdaw gas would not lower energy bills this winter, nor its own earlier finding that the field is unlikely to have a significant effect on gas prices. Without it, a reader weighing Trump's 'very rich' claim against the listed benefits may assume households will feel the gain in their bills.

Sky News reports Donald Trump's claim that drilling will make the UK 'very rich', attributes it to him, and corrects his confusion of oil and gas. It then gives the expected benefits of Jackdaw in its own voice with no source, and it gives the campaigners who oppose the field one clause while ministers and Downing Street get their argument in full. It leaves out the Energy Secretary's own admission that Jackdaw will not lower bills this winter.

  1. States one side's claim as fact

    Minor

“is expected to increase domestic gas production by around 6% at its peak, safeguard hundreds of jobs and provide an estimated £2.9bn economic boost”

    Why this matters
Sky News gives the 6% peak figure, the jobs and the £2.9bn boost in its own voice. The words "expected" and "estimated" never say who expects or estimates them.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes these as neutral, settled figures and judges Trump's 'very rich' claim against them as if Jackdaw's contribution were large and independently measured.
    The context
Sky's own earlier report attributes the 6% figure to the developer, Adura, owned by Shell and Equinor. The BBC, citing official forecasts, puts Jackdaw at around 1.6% of projected national gas demand over the decade, a much smaller share than the peak figure suggests.

  2. One side gets the space

    Minor

“Although environmental campaigners have strongly criticised the move”

    Why this matters
Sky News names no campaigner and gives none of their reasons. In the same sentence ministers' case is set out in full, and a Downing Street quote on the field's benefits follows.
    The impression it gives
A reader learns only that campaigners object, never why. The government's economic and environmental case is the only argument on the page.
    The context
Sky's own earlier report names Greenpeace and Uplift, who won the court challenge to the original approval. It reports their case that more drilling breaches the UK's climate commitments and does nothing for bills.

    What is missing

The article never says that the Energy Secretary herself said Jackdaw gas would not lower energy bills this winter, nor its own earlier finding that the field is unlikely to have a significant effect on gas prices. Without it, a reader weighing Trump's 'very rich' claim against the listed benefits may assume households will feel the gain in their bills.

What it gets right

  • “But Jackdaw is a large offshore natural gas field in the central North Sea”

Sky News corrects Trump's claim about oil in its own voice rather than letting it stand.

  • “Ministers have yet to decide whether to allow drilling there.”

It makes clear that Rosebank, the oil field Trump may have meant, has not been approved, so his claim of 'opening up the North Sea oil' is not left standing.

  • “Donald Trump tells Andy Burnham”

The headline keeps the 'very rich' claim attributed to Trump and in quotation marks, rather than stating it as fact.
