Iran says Mecca Agreement meeting in Tehran will discuss ‘Zionist expansionism’

Lazar Berman is The Times of Israel's diplomatic reporter

Saudi Arabia and Iran both confirm that senior security officials from the Mecca Agreement states — Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan — will meet in Tehran today with top Iranian officials.

According to the Saudi Foreign Ministry, the Saudi defense minister, Turkish head of intelligence, and Pakistani military chief of staff will meet Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Mohsen Rezaei, head of the Supreme National Security Council, in Tehran.

The meeting, says Saudi Arabia, is meant to “de-escalate between the parties to the current crisis and encourage dialogue and diplomatic solutions.”

The agenda for today’s meeting has not yet been set, says Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei, but “the most important issues threatening our regional security include the expansionism of the Zionist regime, developments in occupied Palestine and the surrounding region, Lebanon.”

One of the most important topics at the meeting, says Baghaei, will be “the US military aggression and the Zionist regime’s aggression and its consequences for the security of the entire region.”

Baghaei says that “the very fact that the countries of the region are seeking to establish or at least seek mechanisms for rational security based on their own interests and concerns is a positive thing.”

What we found (1)

The Times of Israel reports that Saudi, Turkish and Pakistani security chiefs will meet Iranian leaders in Tehran. It attributes each claim about the meeting's purpose and agenda to the Saudi Foreign Ministry or to Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman. The one flaw is small: the headline puts in quotation marks a compressed phrase that Baghaei did not say in those words.

  1. Headline goes beyond the article

    Minor

    “‘Zionist expansionism’”

    Why this matters
The headline puts the words ‘Zionist expansionism’ inside quotation marks as if Iran said them.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes ‘Zionist expansionism’ as Baghaei's exact words.
    The context
The body quotes Baghaei saying "the expansionism of the Zionist regime". The headline compresses his words into a phrase nobody in the article used and keeps the quotation marks. The meaning is close, so the gap is small.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“the expansionism of the Zionist regime”

    Show it in the article

What it gets right

  • “The meeting, says Saudi Arabia, is meant to”

The Times of Israel gives the purpose of the meeting as Saudi Arabia's stated aim, not as its own verdict.

  • “One of the most important topics at the meeting, says Baghaei, will be”

The outlet reports Iran's agenda in Baghaei's quoted words and attributes it to him, without adding scare framing in its own voice.

  • “According to the Saudi Foreign Ministry”

The list of participants is sourced to a named official body.
