IDF strike on Gaza university reportedly kills three

Emanuel (Mannie) Fabian is The Times of Israel's military correspondent

Three Palestinians were killed in an Israeli strike targeting the Islamic University in Gaza City today, according to medical officials in the Strip.

Left out here: Leaves out what changes the picture

The article never says the strike took place during a truce that had been in effect for over a year. Without it a reader may take the strike as part of open hostilities rather than a killing carried out during a ceasefire.

How we know

Palestinian media identifies the dead as Ashraf Dahlan, Shadi Abu Ataya, and Sami Baroud.

Shifa Hospital in Gaza City says it received three bodies and treated eight people who were wounded in the strike, and two sources at the Islamic University say those killed were administrative staff and the injured were students.

The Israeli military tells The Times of Israel that .

The Times of Israel reports that an Israeli strike on the Islamic University in Gaza City killed three Palestinians. It names the actor, the dead and their roles as staff. It ends on the Israeli military's unevidenced claim that the strike targeted terror operatives, and it never says the strike came during a truce that had held for over a year.

  1. Gives a contested claim the last word

    Minor

“the strike targeted terror operatives, and further details would be provided later”

    Why this matters
The words "targeted terror operatives" give the Israeli military the closing line of the report. The article adds no note that the military named none of the dead as operatives and offered no evidence.
    The impression it gives
A reader may leave with the military's account as the settled explanation for why staff at a university were killed.
    The context
The article's own university sources say the dead were administrative staff and the wounded were students. AFP's report quotes the Israeli army saying only that the strike was under review. The claim is attributed, but it stands at the end with no evidence and no reply.

    What is missing

The article never says the strike took place during a truce that had been in effect for over a year. Without it a reader may take the strike as part of open hostilities rather than a killing carried out during a ceasefire.

What it gets right

  • “Three Palestinians were killed in an Israeli strike targeting the Islamic University in Gaza City today”

It names who carried out the strike and uses the word killed, with no passive construction hiding the actor.

  • “Ashraf Dahlan, Shadi Abu Ataya, and Sami Baroud”

It gives the names of the Palestinian dead rather than leaving them as a number.

  • “those killed were administrative staff and the injured were students”

It reports who the victims were, from sources at the university, before the military's claim.
