UN inquiry says Israel kept committing genocide in Gaza after truce

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.5 findings

GENEVA, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Israel continued to commit genocide in Gaza after last October's US-brokered ceasefire in the enclave, a UN commission said in a report published on Monday that Israel dismissed as part of a "misinformation campaign". The report by the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel examined violations against Palestinian children since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas on October 7, 2023 up to September this year.

It said Israeli authorities had kept committing "genocidal acts with the genocidal intent to destroy, in whole or in part, the Palestinians in Gaza", and that the situation had also continued to deteriorate in the occupied West Bank. Another report by the commission in September last year found that Israel hadcommitted genocide in Gaza and that top Israeli officials including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu incited these acts — .

The Israeli mission in Geneva said thelatest report was part of a misinformation campaign todemonize the State of Israel. “The attempt to destroy the Jewish state ... continues today through efforts by actors such as the UN Commission of Inquiry to undermine Israel’s legitimacy and deny its fundamental right to exist and defend itself," Ambassador Daniel Meron said in a statement. HEAVY MUNITIONS HIT POPULATED AREAS, COMMISSION SAYS The commission found that Israeli forces continued using heavy munitions, drones, quadcopters, artillery and sniper fire in densely populated areas during the ceasefire in Gaza.

Left out here: Leaves out what changes the picture

The article says Israel kept committing genocide after the truce and that heavy munitions were used in populated areas. It never gives the commission's count of the dead: Israeli fire across the advancing front killed at least 196 Palestinians during the ceasefire, including 18 women and 43 children, as Israeli control grew from 53% to at least 60% of Gaza. Without this, a reader does not learn that the finding rests on documented killings during the truce.

How we know

It said the "Yellow Line" which waspresented as a temporary ceasefire demarcation, was encroaching increasingly into Gaza, and becominga de facto border, which the report said reflected Israel’s expanding territorial control of Gaza. on October 7, 2023. In its report to the UN Security Council, the commission said the situation in the West Bank had also deteriorated sharply, with increasing from six between 2008 and October 6, 2023, to 254 between October 7, 2023 and September 30, 2026.

Commission Chair Srinivasan Muralidhar said the intentional killing of Palestinian civilians and destruction of homes in the West Bank formed part of a broader strategy to exterminate and displace Palestinians. , with 34,176 Palestinians remaining displaced as of August 2026, the report said. The commission also faulted the Palestinian Authority, saying it had targeted Palestinians who voice dissenting views and that journalists and human rights defenders had been killed and injured. Left out here: Leaves out what changes the picture

The article does not report the commission's findings of torture, rape and sexual violence, including six documented cases of Israeli guards sexually abusing detainees from Gaza at Sde Teiman. A reader comes away thinking the report covered only killings, munitions and displacement.

Al-Monitor reports the UN Commission of Inquiry's finding that Israel kept committing genocide in Gaza after the truce, and it names Israel as the actor in Gaza. It gives the Palestinian toll with a source attached while stating the Israeli toll as plain fact. In the West Bank passage it reports killings, destruction and mass displacement without saying who carried them out. It also leaves out the commission's count of Palestinians killed during the ceasefire.

  1. Doubts one side's dead and not the other's

    Serious

“Palestinian authorities say more than 74,000 people have been killed in Israel's assault on Gaza, launched after Hamas-led fighters killed about 1,200 people in southern Israel”

    Why this matters
In one sentence, the words "Palestinian authorities say" attach a source to the Palestinian dead, while "Hamas-led fighters killed about 1,200 people" is stated in the outlet's own voice.
    The impression it gives
The Israeli toll is settled fact and the Palestinian toll is a claim by one party.
    The context
Gaza's Ministry of Health has recorded 74,392 Palestinians killed by the Israeli occupation. Treating the two tolls differently is the pattern of caveating Palestinian figures and not Israeli ones.

    Written straight

Israel's assault on Gaza has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. It was launched after Hamas-led fighters killed about 1,200 people in southern Israel, according to Israeli figures.

  2. Hides who did it

    Minor

“the number of Palestinians killed in airstrikes”

    Why this matters
The words "killed in airstrikes" report 254 Palestinians killed in the West Bank and never say whose aircraft carried out the strikes.
    The impression it gives
Palestinians in the West Bank died in airstrikes by no named party.
    The context
The commission's report attributes the West Bank abuses to Israeli forces.

“Military operations since January 2025 have led to the largest displacement of Palestinians in the West Bank since 1967”

    Why this matters
"Military operations" names no army. The largest displacement since 1967 is put down to operations that seem to belong to nobody.
    The impression it gives
West Bank Palestinians were displaced by unnamed military activity.
    The context
The operations are those of Israeli occupation forces, whom the commission accuses of crimes against humanity in the West Bank.

  3. Uses a loaded word

    Minor

    “accusations that Israel called scandalous”

    Why this matters
The sentence says the commission "found" Israel had committed genocide, then calls that finding "accusations".
    The impression it gives
The September 2025 genocide finding is still only an accusation.
    The context
The UN Commission of Inquiry found on 16 September 2025 that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza. That is a documented finding.
