US costs of Iran war rise to over $47 billion, according to Pentagon estimate

The US military has spent over $47 billion so far to prosecute the war in Iran, more than 25% higher than the Defense Department’s estimate in July, according to Pentagon data reviewed by Reuters.

The bulk of the war’s operational costs included more than $29 billion to replace expended munitions and more than $6 billion to replace military equipment. The figures do not clearly include a cost estimate to repair damage to US bases sustained by Iranian missile and drone attacks.

About this analysis

The Times of Israel relays a Reuters report that the Pentagon's estimate of US spending on the war in Iran has passed $47 billion, and breaks down the munitions and equipment costs. It attributes the figure to Pentagon data and tells the reader that base repair costs are not clearly counted. Nothing in this short entry misleads.

What it gets right

  • “according to Pentagon estimate”

The headline keeps the attribution the body gives, so the reader knows the $47 billion is the Pentagon's own estimate and not an established total.

  • “The figures do not clearly include a cost estimate to repair damage to US bases sustained by Iranian missile and drone attacks.”

The outlet tells the reader what the Pentagon figure leaves out, so the total is not passed off as the full cost. Reuters, The New York Times and CBS News all report the same gap.
