Israel defense minister says ‘mission not complete’ on Iran

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.1 finding

Israel is not finished with Iran, its defense minister said Sunday, as he also warned Tehran’s Lebanese ally Hezbollah to hold fire in any resumption of war. Defense Minister Israel Katz renewed charges that Iran -- attacked twice since last year in major Israeli-US bombing campaigns -- is pursuing nuclear weapons, . “With regard to Iran, the mission is still not complete. Iran is trying to renew its efforts to obtain nuclear weapons -- alongside other grave efforts that place the State of Israel in real danger,” Katz said.

But it remains unclear if he has the support of US President Donald Trump, his close ally, who suffered a major rebuke from voters in elections on Tuesday, in part over anger against the war. Israel’s Channel 12 reported Friday that Netanyahu and the Mossad intelligence service attempted an operation against Iran on the eve of Israel’s own October 27 election but that the United States found out and stopped it.

Netanyahu has ordered a multi-nation war since the unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, 2023 by Hamas, the Palestinian militant group in Gaza backed by Iran’s clerical state. Israel has devastated Gaza and has invaded Lebanon, after Hezbollah fired on Israel in solidarity with Iran. Israel has also moved past a former ceasefire line to occupy part of historic adversary Syria after the fall in 2024 of longtime leader Bashar al-Assad.

“We will not withdraw from the security zones in Gaza, Lebanon and Syria, and if the terrorist organization Hezbollah chooses to join Iran in an attack on Israel, it will suffer extremely severe blows,” Katz said. Netanyahu suffered losses in the October 27 election, with his rival Gadi Eisenkot tasked with forming a new government. Eisenkot has warned Israel’s military that Netanyahu has no mandate and that it should not go to war for his “political needs,” although the former army chief has largely supported Netanyahu’s war decisions.

“We may argue and we may disagree, but when the security of the state is at stake, we must know how to rise above our disputes,” said Katz, who was speaking at a ceremony for Israeli troops who died in a 1956 attack on Egypt. What we found (1)

Al Arabiya English reports Israel Katz's speech, attributes his nuclear weapons charge to him and notes that Tehran denies it. It names the US and Israel as the attackers of Iran and Israel as the actor in Gaza and Lebanon. Its only weakness is that Katz is quoted at length while Iran's response is reduced to one clause.

    Minor

    “a claim that Tehran denies”

    Why this matters
These five words are the whole of Iran's side in the article. Katz is quoted directly across several sentences, including his charge that Iran is trying to obtain nuclear weapons and his threats against Hezbollah.
    The impression it gives
A reader hears Katz's case in his own words and at length, while Iran's position appears only as a bare denial with no content.
    The context
The article attributes the charge correctly and records the denial, so nothing false is stated. But Katz gets direct quotes in S3, S4, S12 and S15, and no Iranian official is quoted or paraphrased beyond the denial.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“Iran is trying to renew its efforts to obtain nuclear weapons”
    • Elsewhere in the article“it will suffer extremely severe blows”

    Show it in the article

What it gets right

  • “attacked twice since last year in major Israeli-US bombing campaigns”

The outlet names Israel and the US as the attackers of Iran in its own voice, rather than writing the war as something that simply broke out.

  • “renewed charges that Iran”

The nuclear weapons claim is presented as Katz's charge, not as the outlet's fact, and the same sentence records Tehran's denial.

  • “Israel has devastated Gaza and has invaded Lebanon”

The outlet puts Israel as the subject of the destruction in Gaza and the invasion of Lebanon, in the active voice.
