The tornado hit Portchester, a village on the eastern boundary of Fareham, shortly after midnight on Friday leaving a reported land track of approximately 1.6 kilometres. The tornado was associated with heavy showers moving inland from the English Channel as Storm Austen brought unsettled weather to the region. The Tornado & Storm Research Organisation (TORRO), who described the frightening weather event as “weak”, says further analysis is expected to establish more details about its track, intensity and any potential damage caused.

About this analysis

The Daily Express reports that a weak tornado linked to Storm Austen struck Portchester in Hampshire just after midnight on 23 October, leaving a 1.6 km track. It also covers wider storm disruption, including the partial collapse of Brighton's West Pier, power cuts and warnings for Storm Boelo. The article attributes the tornado's confirmation and rating to TORRO, and nothing in it misleads the reader.

What it gets right

  • “The Tornado & Storm Research Organisation (TORRO), who described the frightening weather event as “weak”, says further analysis is expected to establish more details about its track, intensity and any potential damage caused.”

The Express names the body that confirmed the tornado and gives its own rating of the event as weak. It also tells the reader the details are still being analysed, so the tornado's strength is not overstated.

  • “leaving a reported land track of approximately 1.6 kilometres”

The Express gives a specific, attributed measurement that matches TORRO's own statement in S15. It does not inflate the scale of the event.
