The second named storm of the autumn has battered the country with heavy rain and wind gusts of up to 80mph. It has left thousands of homes without power, widespread travel disruption, and the cancellation of major events including the Eryri National Park marathon in north Wales. Meanwhile, the Environment Agency (EA) has issued six "act now" flood warnings in the north west of England. The agency is urging residents in the affected areas to avoid low-lying roads and "start acting on your flood plan if you have one".

There are four other warnings across the Cumbrian coastline, stretching from Saltcoats to Port Carlisle. The EA says: "High tides, strong winds and large waves are expected to cause flooding this evening." It adds: "Flooding is possible due to high tides and strong winds from Storm Boelo."

Residents are urged to avoid seafronts and harbours due to wave overtopping and spray containing debris. They should also stay away from coastal roads, footpaths and car parks due to the ongoing risk of flooding. Warnings are also in place on the south coast and the EA says officials are continuing to monitor the situation.

About this analysis

The Daily Express reports six Environment Agency 'act now' flood warnings on the north west coast of England as Storm Boelo brings high tides, strong winds and heavy rain, along with Met Office amber and yellow wind warnings. The warnings and advice are attributed to the agencies that issued them, and the headline matches the body. Nothing in it misleads the reader.

What it gets right

  • “The agency is urging residents in the affected areas to avoid low-lying roads and "start acting on your flood plan if you have one".”

The Express gives readers the Environment Agency's safety advice in its own words and says who issued it.

  • “The EA says: "High tides, strong winds and large waves are expected to cause flooding this evening."”

The Express attributes the flood forecast to the agency and states the cause plainly.

  • “which covers the County Antrim and County Londonderry parts of Northern Ireland until 10am”

The Express says exactly where the amber warning applies and when it ends, so readers can tell whether they are affected.
