Al-Monitor, on Gaza, 25 October 2026

Al-Monitor writes off more than a year of continued Israeli killing as a truce that "has failed to completely halt the violence there", with no actor and no figure, although the outlet itself reported three weeks earlier that Israeli forces had killed more than 1,440 Palestinians since the ceasefire was announced. It also records three further deaths "in strikes" with nobody named as firing them, in the sentence before it names Israeli gunfire. The three men killed at the Islamic University are never named, although other coverage of the same strike identified all three.

What we found

  1. Sanitises violence or disorder

    Minor

“has failed to completely halt the violence there”

    What the words do
Al-Monitor sums up a year of continued Israeli attacks in its own voice as a truce failing to 'completely halt the violence', with no actor and no scale attached.
What a reader comes away believing
A reader takes the continued killing as residual, minor friction that a broadly working truce has not quite tidied up, with nobody in particular responsible.
    What is actually the case
Al-Monitor reported on 3 October 2026 that Israeli forces had killed more than 1,440 people since the ceasefire was announced, and on 12 October that Gaza health officials put the figure at at least 1,400 Palestinians killed by Israeli fire.

  2. Hides who did it

    Minor

“three in strikes around the southern city of Khan Yunis”

    What the words do
The sentence records three more deaths 'in strikes' with no one named as firing them, unlike the next sentence, which names Israeli gunfire.
What a reader comes away believing
A reader is left to guess who carried out the strikes that killed these three people.
    What is actually the case
Al-Monitor names Israeli gunfire for the wounded man in the very next sentence, and its earlier reporting attributes the killings since the ceasefire to Israeli fire.

  3. Writes Palestinians out of their own story

    Minor

    What is missing

The three men killed are never named. Other coverage of the same strike identified them as Ashraf Dahlan, Shadi Abu Ataya and Sami Baroud. Without the names the dead stay a figure in a headline.

  4. Drops what it reported before

    Minor

    What is missing

The article gives no figure for the killing since the ceasefire, although Al-Monitor published that figure three weeks earlier. Without it a reader cannot judge what 'failed to completely halt the violence' covers.

Strike on Gaza university kills three: staff, hospital

An Israeli strike on a university in Gaza City killed three people on Sunday, staff and a local hospital said, while the civil defence agency reported five others killed elsewhere in the territory. Reached for comment on the strike at the Islamic University, the Israeli army said that it was currently under review. Al Shifa hospital reported receiving three bodies and treating eight people who were wounded in the drone strike, with two sources at the university saying the dead were employees and the injured were students. The university said the campus and its surroundings had been targeted twice on Sunday, condemning the attacks and mourning those killed in a statement. Gaza's education ministry likewise condemned the strike and said "the global silence regarding attacks on students and universities serves as encouragement for the continuation of these crimes". "This strike occurs at a time when the higher education sector is facing total annihilation, with 95 percent of the buildings belonging to academic institutions having been damaged as a result of the war," it continued. "This heinous assault is part of a continuous series of attacks on education; over the past six days, 10 students and educators have been killed by the occupation's fire." In a statement, the army said it had been "targeting a terrorist from Hamas' military wing". "Following the identification of uninvolved individuals in the area, the munition was diverted in order to mitigate harm to them. The incident is under review," it said, without specifying whether those killed at the university were hit by accident. A truce has been in effect in Gaza for over a year, but . Gaza civil defence spokesman Mahmoud Bassal said five other people were killed on Sunday, , one in central Deir al Balah and one northwest of Gaza City. One more person was wounded by Israeli gunfire in Jabalia refugee camp in the north. bur/smw/jfx
