Al-Monitor, on Gaza, 20 October 2026

Al-Monitor's wire report names the couple killed in Gaza City, gives the ages of the dead and names Israeli fire as the cause, which is more than much coverage does. But in its own voice it writes that Israel has "stepped up strikes on the group", accepting Israel's framing that the targets are Hamas in the same report that says those killed were a married couple in an apartment and a 17-year-old boy. It also calls Israel's killing in Gaza "the conflict" and never once uses the word genocide.

What we found

  1. States one side's claim as fact

    Serious

“has stepped up strikes on the group in recent weeks”

    What the words do
Al-Monitor writes in its own voice that Israel's increased strikes are "on the group", meaning Hamas, after attributing only the rearming claim to Israel.
What a reader comes away believing
That the strikes of recent weeks, including the ones this report covers, are aimed at Hamas fighters.
    What is actually the case
The article's own facts say the dead that day were a married couple in an apartment and a 17-year-old boy, and that Gaza health officials count at least 1,500 Palestinians killed by Israeli fire since the ceasefire. The article never says whether any of those killed were civilians, and offers no basis beyond Israel's assertion for calling the strikes strikes on Hamas.

    How we know

    Written straight

Israel says Hamas has been rearming and attacking in violation of the ceasefire, and has increased its strikes in Gaza in recent weeks. Those killed in them include a married couple in a Gaza City apartment and a 17-year-old boy; Gaza health officials count at least 1,500 Palestinians killed by Israeli fire since the ceasefire began.

  2. Uses a loaded word

    Minor

“a deal to end the conflict”

    What the words do
Al-Monitor calls Israel's assault on Gaza "the conflict" in its own voice.
What a reader comes away believing
That this is a two-sided war between matched parties.
    What is actually the case
The UN Commission of Inquiry found in September 2025 that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza, and other coverage of the same day's killings calls it Israel's genocidal war. The word genocide appears nowhere in this report.

Israeli fire kills four people in Gaza, medics say

CAIRO, Oct 20 (Reuters) - Israeli strikes and gunfire killed at least four Palestinians, including a married couple and a 17-year-old, in separate incidents in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, health officials said. Medics said an Israeli airstrike killed Akram Yassin and his wife Dina Abu Baker in an apartment in Gaza City. The Israeli military said it struck a militant in the area, without giving further details. In Khan Younis, in the south, medics said a 17-year-old boy was killed by Israeli gunfire near the Qizan Al-Najar neighbourhood, while another was killed by Israeli gunfire in the Zeitoun suburb east of Gaza City, taking Tuesday's death toll to at least four. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on either of the two gunfire incidents. Palestinians inspected the aftermath of the strike on the apartment in Gaza City before gathering for the couple's funeral. "We’re supposed to be in a ceasefire period, but honestly, we are not seeing a ceasefire or anything. The war is still going on, assassinations are continuing, and the shelling has not stopped," said Mahmoud Yassin, whose brother was killed. Israel, which says the Hamas militant group has been rearming and launching attacks in violation of the ceasefire, . Hamas has denied trying to carry out attacks or rebuild its arsenal and accuses Israel of undermining the Gaza peace deal. The ceasefire, brokered by the US a year ago, calls for the eventual reconstruction of the territory. But little progress has been made towards implementing that includes terms for Hamas to disarm and Israel to withdraw its troops. Gaza health officials have said at least 1,500 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since the ceasefire. Israel says four of its soldiers have been killed by militants in Gaza over the same period. (Reporting by Nidal al-Mughrabi;Editing by Alison Williams)
