IDF says troops found underground passageway next to Hebron ...

Findings are available in the analysis below.1 finding

Emanuel (Mannie) Fabian is The Times of Israel's military correspondent

IDF troops have located an underground passageway adjacent to the home of one of the Palestinian gunmen who carried out Friday’s deadly shooting attack in the West Bank city of Hebron, the military says.

The military says the tunnel found in Hebron has no exit and is located deep within the West Bank city, not posing a threat to any Israeli settlements in the area.

The excavation is found to be approximately 15 meters deep and 75 centimeters wide, the army says.

Additionally, the IDF says that an “electronic device” found inside the tunnel has been taken for investigation.

The military says the tunnel was found during scans of over 500 buildings and structures in Hebron, amid an ongoing operation in the neighborhood where the two gunmen lived.

The raid has displaced some 3,000 Palestinian residents of the area.

Left out here: Leaves out what changes the picture

The article says only that the raid displaced some 3,000 Palestinians. It leaves out that Israeli occupation forces demolished homes and businesses in Hebron, with at least one street appearing flattened, and took over Palestinian homes as barracks and observation posts after forcing residents out. Without this, a reader believes the displacement was an incidental result of searching 500 buildings, not the demolition and seizure of people's homes.

How we know

So far during the operation, the IDF says it has apprehended some 50 suspects for questioning and seized just two guns.

In the attack on Friday, Hebron residents Mohammad Jaaba and Firas Jaaba opened fire on a checkpoint at the northern exit to the West Bank city, killing Staff Sgt. Ron Yonatan Roytman and Sgt. Yuval Shai Svilem and wounding three other troops. Both gunmen were shot dead by troops.

What we found (1)

The Times of Israel attributes the army's tunnel claims to the army throughout, names the soldiers and the two gunmen, and says plainly that troops shot the gunmen dead. It reports that the raid displaced some 3,000 Palestinians but never says that Israeli occupation forces demolished homes and businesses and turned others into military posts, as the BBC and Anadolu reported.

What it gets right

  • “Both gunmen were shot dead by troops.”

The article names who killed the two Palestinians and says they were shot dead, with no softening of the killing.

  • “the IDF says it has apprehended some 50 suspects for questioning and seized just two guns”

The army's claims are attributed to the army, and the article sets the scale of the raid against how little it found.

  • “The raid has displaced some 3,000 Palestinian residents of the area.”

The article calls the operation a raid and counts the Palestinians it displaced in its own voice.
