Iran sees only unacceptable ideas in latest mediation to end war, official says

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.2 findings

Qatari mediators have presented Iran with a new draft deal , an official briefed on the negotiations says, but a senior Iranian official says Doha only put forward unacceptable ideas that did not amount to an offer.

The official briefed on the negotiations, who is not from Iran, says a new draft peace proposal for the eight-month-old conflict was presented on Sunday and was being considered by Tehran, with a response expected by the end of the week.

Qatar, along with Pakistan, has led mediation to end the war, which has disrupted global shipping and oil supplies and recently spread to Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

The proposal presented by Qatar sets a seven-day timeline addressing both Tehran’s and Washington’s concerns, laying out daily confidence-building steps that each side must take, the official briefed on the negotiations says. The timeline could begin early next week and several countries would act as guarantors of the deal, the official adds.

Shortly afterwards, a senior Iranian official involved in the talks says Qatar had presented only “unacceptable ideas and not an offer,” and that Tehran’s policy on showing no flexibility over the nuclear issue remained unchanged.

Left out here: Leaves out what changes the picture

The article closes on a senior Iranian official saying Tehran will show no flexibility on the nuclear issue, but never reports Iran's stated conditions: an end to the US blockade of Iranian ports and the lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil exports, nor that Washington wants the nuclear programme negotiated first and that Iran rejects claims its programme is military. Without this a reader takes Iran's rejection as simple refusal rather than a dispute over sequencing and terms.

What we found (2)

The Times of Israel reruns a Reuters report on Qatari mediation but describes the war as one 'with the US' only, dropping Israel as a party when every Reuters version of the same story says 'the US and Israel'. It also ends on Iran's refusal to show flexibility on the nuclear issue without the conditions Iran has set, so Tehran's rejection reads as bare intransigence.

    Serious

“to end the war with the US”

    Why this matters
The Times of Israel says the draft deal is meant 'to end the war with the US', naming only the United States as Iran's opponent in the war.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes the war being mediated is a two-party conflict between Iran and the United States, and that Israel is not a combatant whose part in the war is on the table.
    The context
The Reuters report the article reproduces almost word for word says the deal is to end 'the war with the US and Israel'. The same report says Iran has plans ready if 'the US and Israel resumed attacks'. Israel's removal from the list of parties changes who the reader understands is fighting Iran and who a peace deal must bind.
