LONDON: Several thousand pro-Palestinian protesters marched through central London on Saturday, calling for an end to Israeli strikes on Gaza, three years after Hamas’ October 7 attack.

Marchers carried placards reading “End the genocide” and “Free Palestine” as they made their way along the route near the British parliament.

“We are here today to mark three years of the ongoing genocide in Gaza,” Aimee Shalan, director of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, told AFP.

She said UK-led Western sanctions over settler violence did not go far enough, calling for “full sanctions on Israel.”

A ceasefire began a year ago and although Israel has reduced its level of attacks it has kept striking Gaza on a near-daily basis.

Strikes have killed some 1,450 Palestinians since the ceasefire, according to Gaza’s health ministry.

Recent graduate Hibo Hassan, 23, said he wanted to show his solidarity.

“Although it is happening in the Middle East, it affects us here now,” he said.

“It’s extremely dystopian and that is something we should be all scared about,” he added.

The “National March for Palestine” organized by the Palestine Coalition, according to police, came three days after the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attack.

The attack was the deadliest in Israel’s history, resulting in the deaths of 1,221 people, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.

Militants also dragged 251 hostages into Gaza, 44 of them already dead.

In response, and killed more than 74,200 people, according to Gaza’s health ministry.

A small counter-demonstration was organized by Stop The Hate UK, a Jewish-led, pro-Israel campaign group.

Ahead of the march, London’s Metropolitan police said it would be using powers under public order legislation to require anyone wearing a face covering to deliberately hide their identity to remove it.

“We will take a zero-tolerance approach to hate crime and other offending,” said senior Met officer Carl Galvin.

What we found (1)

Arab News reports a London march for Palestine fairly and names Israel as the party striking and killing in Gaza. Both death tolls carry a source. In its own voice, though, the outlet calls Israel's genocide the "Gaza war" and a "military offensive", leaving the word genocide only to the marchers in quotation marks, in a story about a march against that genocide.

“The rally coincides with the anniversary of Gaza war”

    Why this matters
In its own voice the outlet calls what the march protests the "Gaza war". The word genocide appears only on placards and in the organiser's quoted words.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the genocide as the marchers' claim and the outlet's neutral term as "war", as if the finding were a matter of opinion.
    The context
The UN Commission of Inquiry found on 16 September 2025 that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza, and the ICJ has issued provisional measures in the genocide case. The march is a march against that genocide, so the story turns on it, yet the outlet never states it.

“Israel launched a military offensive that has left most of Gaza in ruins”

    Why this matters
Here the outlet sets out the destruction and killing in its own voice and names Israel, but calls it a "military offensive". The documented finding of genocide is left out at the point where the outlet describes what Israel did.
    The impression it gives
A reader reads the 74,200 dead and the ruined strip as the result of an ordinary military campaign. Genocide stays a slogan the protesters chose.
    The context
The UN Commission of Inquiry has found that this campaign is genocide, and the ICJ's provisional measures are a documented finding, not an allegation.
