Iran says Mecca Agreement meeting in Tehran will discuss ‘Zionist expansionism’

Lazar Berman is The Times of Israel's diplomatic reporter

Saudi Arabia and Iran both confirm that senior security officials from the Mecca Agreement states — Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan — will meet in Tehran today with top Iranian officials.

According to the Saudi Foreign Ministry, the Saudi defense minister, Turkish head of intelligence, and Pakistani military chief of staff will meet Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Mohsen Rezaei, head of the Supreme National Security Council, in Tehran.

The meeting, says Saudi Arabia, is meant to “de-escalate between the parties to the current crisis and encourage dialogue and diplomatic solutions.”

The agenda for today’s meeting has not yet been set, says Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei, but “the most important issues threatening our regional security include the expansionism of the Zionist regime, developments in occupied Palestine and the surrounding region, Lebanon.”

One of the most important topics at the meeting, says Baghaei, will be “the US military aggression and the Zionist regime’s aggression and its consequences for the security of the entire region.”

Baghaei says that “the very fact that the countries of the region are seeking to establish or at least seek mechanisms for rational security based on their own interests and concerns is a positive thing.”

What we found (1)

The Times of Israel reports a four-way security meeting in Tehran and attributes every claim to Saudi or Iranian officials. The one flaw is small: the headline puts 'Zionist expansionism' in quotation marks, though Baghaei actually spoke of 'the expansionism of the Zionist regime'.

  1. Headline goes beyond the article

    Minor

    “will discuss ‘Zionist expansionism’”

    Why this matters
The headline puts 'Zionist expansionism' in quotation marks and says the meeting will discuss it.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes it that Iran used those exact words and named the subject as a confirmed agenda item.
    The context
Baghaei spoke of 'the expansionism of the Zionist regime' as one of the issues threatening regional security. In the same breath he said the agenda had not yet been set. The headline turns a paraphrase into a quotation and a listed threat into a fixed agenda item. The gap is small and the meaning stays close.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“The agenda for today’s meeting has not yet been set”
    • Elsewhere in the article“the expansionism of the Zionist regime”

    Show it in the article

What it gets right

  • “According to the Saudi Foreign Ministry”

The article tells the reader where the list of attendees comes from instead of stating it bare.

  • “The meeting, says Saudi Arabia, is meant to”

The article reports the stated purpose of the meeting as Saudi Arabia's account, not as the outlet's own verdict on the meeting's aims.
