After reports of rifts over Iran, IDF says it’s focused on missions, ‘any other discourse is misleading’

Emanuel (Mannie) Fabian is The Times of Israel's military correspondent

The Israeli military issues a response to recent media reports about a major confrontation between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir related to Iran. The statement neither confirms nor denies the reports.

“Regarding various reports in the Israeli and international media over the past day, which attributed various statements to the chief of staff or senior military officials, we wish to clarify: The IDF is focused on its missions and maintains a high state of alert on all fronts, in light of various warnings and the sensitivity of the current period,” the military says, referring to the elections.

“The operational activities and considerations of the IDF are solely security-related, professional, matter-of-fact and statesmanlike, and any other discourse is misleading and irrelevant,” the military adds.

About this analysis

The Times of Israel reports, in a short liveblog entry, the Israeli military's statement responding to media reports of a confrontation between Netanyahu and the chief of staff Eyal Zamir over Iran. It tells the reader plainly that the statement neither confirms nor denies those reports, and it connects the military's reference to a sensitive period to the elections. Nothing in it misleads.

What it gets right

  • “The statement neither confirms nor denies the reports.”

The outlet tells the reader in its own voice that the military's statement is not a denial. Without this line, the closing quote calling other discourse 'misleading' could read as a rebuttal of the reported confrontation.

  • “referring to the elections”

The outlet explains what the military's vague 'sensitivity of the current period' refers to. This links the statement to the election timing at the centre of the reported dispute.
