Iran says fishermen found after accusing US of attack in Hormuz

Iran says two fishermen it had reported missing earlier today have now been found, following what it calls a US attack on a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.

“Two fishermen from Qeshm, who had gone missing following an attack by the American enemy on their fishing boat this morning, have been found,” state television says.

Earlier, state TV had cited a provincial official as saying that two fishermen had gone missing and two others were wounded in what he called an attack by the United States on their vessel in the crucial Hormuz waterway.

AFP has contacted for comment the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees American military operations in the region.

About this analysis

The Times of Israel reports, in a short liveblog entry, that Iranian state television says two fishermen missing after what Iran calls a US attack on their boat in the Strait of Hormuz have been found, and that two others were wounded. The outlet attributes each claim to Iranian state media and notes that AFP sought comment from US Central Command. Nothing in the entry misleads its reader.

What it gets right

  • ““Two fishermen from Qeshm, who had gone missing following an attack by the American enemy on their fishing boat this morning, have been found,” state television says.”

The outlet quotes Iranian state television directly and names where the fishermen came from, so the reader hears Iran's account in Iran's own words.

  • “two fishermen had gone missing and two others were wounded”

The outlet reports the wounded alongside the missing, so the harm to the crew is not reduced to a story about men who turned up safe.

  • “AFP has contacted for comment the US Central Command (CENTCOM)”

The outlet tells the reader that the accused party has been asked to respond, and it does not fill the gap with an unverified denial.
