About this analysis

The Express reports a three-vehicle crash in Bathgate, West Lothian, during Storm Boelo, in which 20-year-old Arran Callander and an 84-year-old man died, and carries tributes from family and friends and a police appeal for witnesses. It ties the crash to the storm only by timing and leaves the cause to the police enquiry. Nothing in it misleads the reader.

What it gets right

  • “The tragedy unfolded as an amber weather warning for Storm Boelo was in place until Sunday evening across most of Scotland.”

The article links the crash to the storm by time only. It does not claim the weather caused the collision, which the police have not established.

  • “Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances”

The article gives the police's own words that the cause is still unknown, so the reader is not led to blame any driver or the weather.

  • “The 84-year-old male driver of the Peugeot also died at the scene.”

The article names the second death plainly and returns to it later, so the older victim is not dropped from a story built around the younger man's tributes.
