Following the triple lock being kept for at least three more years in the Autumn Budget, the minister has now announced the cash boosts which will be handed to state pensioners from next April. New state pensioners are those who hit state pension age in or after April 2016, which at the time was 63 for women and 65 for men, so would now not be older than 76. Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT The new state pension will be increased by ‘around £490’, the Secretary of State for Pensions Pat McFadden has confirmed, thanks to the latest triple lock boost.

The triple lock is the mechanism by which pensions are increased by the highest of three metrics; inflation, wage growth or a flat 2.5%. Older state pensioners have also been given the same triple lock, but their basic payments are lower, so the cash boost isn’t as high. Delivering a statutory review for Parliament following the Budget, Pat McFadden wrote: “I am pleased to announce that the basic and full rate of the new state pensions will be increased by 3.9%, in line with the increase in average weekly earnings in the year to May-July 2026.

From April, the full annual rate of the new state pension will increase by around £490. The full annual rate of the basic state pension will increase by around £375.” Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT The boosts represent the maximum amount that the state pension will increase for a state pensioner with a full National Insurance record. 3 extra payments state pensioners could be entitled to State pensioners handed £208 cash boost on top of state pension Andy Burnham announces new £50,270 rule for migrants Get personal finance news, money saving tips and advice plus selcted offers and competitions I would like to receive emails from the Daily Express featuring our latest products, services, offers, and promotions from across the Reach Plc family .

At the same time, Chancellor John Healey has announced the new Pensions Tax Allowance. A policy first announced by Rachel Reeves , it has now been fleshed out, with details of how it will work.

It means that state pensioners receiving the full new state pension will not pay tax on it, despite the amount hitting £13,036 per year, which would exceed the £12,570 Personal Allowance tax threshold. Any income under £13,036 will be tax free, including the pension but also savings, property income and salary. What we found (1)

The Express reports the April uprating of the state pension under the triple lock and quotes Pat McFadden's statutory statement. Its headline says pensioners under 77 are handed a confirmed £490 cash boost. The body says the figure is around £490, is the maximum for someone with a full National Insurance record, and arrives from April, so the overreach is minor.

    Minor

“State pensioners under 77 handed confirmed £490 cash boost by DWP”

    Why this matters
The headline says all state pensioners under 77 are "handed" a "confirmed £490 cash boost". It drops the minister's "around", drops that £490 is a ceiling, and writes a future uprating as money already given.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes every new state pensioner has been given, or will certainly get, an extra £490.
    The context
The body says the full annual rate rises by "around £490" from April. It also says the figure is the maximum, reached only with a full National Insurance record. Pensioners with incomplete records get less, and the rise is the annual triple lock uprating, not a separate cash payment.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“The boosts represent the maximum amount that the state pension will increase for a state pensioner with a full National Insurance record.”
    • Elsewhere in the article“From April, the full annual rate of the new state pension will increase by around £490.”

What it gets right

  • “The boosts represent the maximum amount that the state pension will increase for a state pensioner with a full National Insurance record.”

It tells readers plainly that £490 is a ceiling tied to a full National Insurance record, not what everyone gets.

  • “will be increased by 3.9%, in line with the increase in average weekly earnings in the year to May-July 2026”

It quotes the minister's statement with the percentage and the earnings measure behind it, so readers can see where the figure comes from.
