Support us The Home Secretary’s reputation for being tough on borders disappeared in just a matter of minutes on Monday when she came to Parliament to announce a monumental U-turn. Last year, the Home Secretary said those who came on the social care visa would have to wait 15 years to get ILR.
The Conservatives said we would support these plans because they were a step in the right direction. However, on Monday, the Home Secretary said that every single care worker would be allowed to stay under her plans, one way or another. TRENDING Stories Videos Your Say Even those who came fraudulently and never even worked in social care can stay another five years so they can qualify for settlement. All their hundreds of thousands of dependents can stay too.
Why on earth should those who came here fraudulently get to stay? What’s more, the Government’s own figures show the cost of this cohort of low-skilled care workers to the British taxpayer is £10billion. In a speech in March, Shabana Mahmood said that failing to implement her original plans would be “an affront to the idea of fairness within our society”. Shabana Mahmood announced the migration reforms on Monday | PA I completely agree.
The Home Secretary must explain why she thinks it’s fair for the British taxpayer to subsidise this cohort who have been allowed to stay in the UK forever by this Labour Government. The truth is Labour has turned temporary care visas into an easy route to permanent settlement for hundreds of thousands of immigrants. The Labour Government says its changes were consulted on, but unbelievably, 73 per cent of responses to the indefinite leave to remain consultation came from migrants.
They said the rules for settlement should be laxer. What a surprise. Even worse, the Labour Government agreed with them and gave in to their demands. When a migrant receives ILR, they have the right to claim benefits, get NHS treatment and within a year get British citizenship. As a result, the vast majority of these people will take more out of the system than they put in. This cannot be allowed to happen. Under new leadership, the Conservative Party have a plan to only allow those making a genuine economic contribution to stay – low-skilled migrants and those who are unemployed will have to go home when their temporary work visa expires.
Being honest, far too many people came here after the pandemic – this was completely wrong. But the answer to a mistake is to correct it and not give these people ILR and access to benefits - and the Labour Government will allow this cohort to stay forever. Settlement should rest on fairness and on what people put in, so those on indefinite leave to remain should not be allowed to claim benefits and all low-wage migrants will have to go home when their temporary work visas expire.
Shabana Mahmood could have made these changes as she promised - but she capitulated. By her own previous admission, her surrender to the open borders will cost hardworking taxpayers a staggering £10billion.
