5 Palestinians said killed in Gaza strikes;

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.4 findings

Five Palestinians were reportedly killed by Israeli strikes across the Gaza Strip on Monday, with the Israeli military also announcing it had killed two commanders in the Hamas terror group in earlier attacks, as well as striking who emerged from a tunnel a day prior. The Israel Defense Forces said that one strike on Saturday in Gaza City killed Mohammed Halawa, a Hamas intelligence officer, and another strike on Thursday killed Ahmed Zahir Fuad Abu-Odeh, an engineering officer in the terror group.

“Throughout the war, and particularly recently, the terrorists advanced attacks against IDF troops and Israeli civilians and acted to restore the capabilities of the Hamas terror organization, in systematic violation of the ceasefire,” the IDF said, adding that they were killed to “remove the threat they posed.” Meanwhile, the military said that three Palestinian terror operatives who emerged from a tunnel in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis on Sunday were targeted in an airstrike.

The IDF said the tunnel shaft was located on the western side of the “Yellow Line,” meaning in territory held by Hamas. It is unclear whether the three were killed in the strike, but the IDF said that “hits were identified.” בעקבות התקיפה, זוהו פיצוצי משנה המעידים על הימצאות אמצעי… pic.twitter.com/MpFw4ch2xH — צבא ההגנה לישראל (@idfonline) October 26, 2026 Meanwhile, five Palestinians, including a seven-year-old girl, were killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza on Monday, medical sources and first responders said.

Three of the deaths were reported in the al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis in southern Gaza. In response to a query, the IDF said it was “unaware” of any military activity in al-Mawasi on Monday. Advertisement Mahmoud Bassal, spokesperson for the Hamas-run Gaza Civil Defense agency, told AFP that over the past 24 hours, 13 people were killed and about 60 wounded by in Gaza.

(Omar AL-QATTAA/AFP) Nasser Hospital in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis said the three killed in al-Mawasi “were torn apart by direct hits from shrapnel from the Israeli missile,” adding that several wounded people, including a child and a woman, had also been brought in for treatment.

Left out here: Drops what it reported before

The caption on the Islamic University strike says only that three Palestinians were reportedly killed. Hours earlier the same outlet reported that university sources said those killed were administrative staff and the wounded were students. Placed beside the claim that recent strikes target terror operatives, the caption leaves a reader free to assume the dead were fighters.

How we know

The hospital identified the dead as Hossam al-Zamli, Tamer Abu Sneima and Jouri al-Soufi. . The Gaza Civil Defense agency said a fourth person was killed in an airstrike on a tent housing displaced Palestinians near Khan Younis. In Gaza City’s Rimal neighborhood, another airstrike killed one and injured three, according to the city’s al-Shifa hospital. After a US-brokered ceasefire took hold in Gaza in October 2025, the so-called Yellow Line was established to divide the areas under Israeli control — now some 63 percent of the territory — from those under Hamas control. The military advance on Monday coincided with “heavy gunfire” by the IDF “toward the eastern and northern areas” of Deir al-Balah, home to hundreds of displaced families, the source added. According to the military, many of the recent strikes focused on Hamas operatives involved in building up the terror group’s force and civil control mechanisms in the Strip. Hamas reportedly told a UN official earlier this month that it was prepared to carry out an October 7-style attack in Israel, the West Bank or abroad, following the IDF’s expansion past the Gaza ceasefire line and the Palestinian Authority’s cancellation of legislative elections in November.

Implementation of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza has stalled, with Hamas refusing to disarm and Israel refusing to withdraw from any part of Gaza until that condition is met. (Courtesy of Derech Tkuma) Meanwhile, a drone flown from Israel toward the Gaza Strip overnight was downed by troops, the military said Monday morning. The IDF said the drone was brought down over Israeli territory, near Kibbutz Nahal Oz.

It was later found to be carrying a large payload of suspected drugs. The drone appeared to be a DJI Flycart or similar heavy-duty model, capable of carrying large payloads of dozens of kilograms. There have also been an unknown number of smuggling attempts from Israel into Gaza using drones since the start of the October 2025 ceasefire. According to the IDF, suspects on the Israeli side load up drones with weapons or drugs and fly them over the border into Gaza.

The Times of Israel hedges the Palestinian dead with a verification disclaimer, an inserted "alleged" before Israeli fire and a "Hamas-run" tag on the source of a seven-year-old's age, while the army's claims carry no such caveat. Its headline drops the army's attribution for the two men it calls Hamas commanders. In its own voice the outlet calls those Israel targets "terror operatives" and "terrorists", resting on the military's account.

  1. Labels people on one side's word

    Serious

    “three terror operatives”

    Why this matters
The outlet calls the three people struck near the tunnel "terror operatives" in its own lead sentence.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes it is established that the three were members of an armed group.
    The context
The only source for who they were is the IOF. The article later says the strike details come from "the military said" and admits it does not even know whether the three were killed. No independent basis for the label is given.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“an airstrike was carried out against the shaft and the operatives, the military said”
    • Elsewhere in the article“It is unclear whether the three were killed in the strike”

    Show it in the article

“Israel in recent months has increasingly targeted terror operatives in Gaza, including numerous terrorists who took part in the Hamas-led October 7 atrocities”

    Why this matters
In its own voice the outlet states that Israel's recent strikes target "terror operatives" and "numerous terrorists". Only the threat claim is attributed with "saying".
    The impression it gives
A reader believes the people Israel has been killing in recent months are, as a matter of fact, terrorists, including the dead reported in this same article.
    The context
The identity of those targeted rests on the military's account, which the next sentence attributes. The same article reports named dead, including a seven-year-old girl, whom nobody calls a fighter.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“According to the military, many of the recent strikes focused on Hamas operatives”
    • Elsewhere in the article“The hospital identified the dead as Hossam al-Zamli, Tamer Abu Sneima and Jouri al-Soufi”

    Show it in the article

  2. Doubts one side's dead and not the other's

    Serious

“The Times of Israel could not independently verify the reports.”

    Why this matters
The outlet attaches a verification disclaimer to the Palestinian deaths reported by medics and first responders.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes the Palestinian deaths are doubtful in a way the army's claims are not.
    The context
The army's claims about the two commanders it says it killed carry no such disclaimer, although the outlet could verify them no better. The same pattern of caveats for Palestinian figures and none for Israeli claims is documented.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“The Israel Defense Forces said that one strike on Saturday in Gaza City killed Mohammed Halawa”
    • On the recordNewsCord's reading of five BBC Complaints Team responses found the BBC attaches verification caveats to Palestinian casualty figures while treating Israeli government denials as sufficient on their own, without caveat.newscord.org (opens in a new tab)

    Show it in the article

    “alleged Israeli fire and airstrikes”

    Why this matters
The outlet inserts "alleged" into its paraphrase of the civil defence spokesperson.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes it is uncertain whether Israel caused the 13 deaths and 60 injuries.
    The context
The article itself reports Israeli strikes in its lead and quotes Nasser Hospital describing an "Israeli missile". The word "alleged" casts doubt on the actor that the outlet's own reporting names.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“Five Palestinians were reportedly killed by Israeli strikes”
    • Elsewhere in the article“torn apart by direct hits from shrapnel from the Israeli missile”

    Show it in the article

    “Gaza’s Hamas-run Education Ministry gave al-Soufi’s age as 7”

    Why this matters
The outlet tags the source of a dead child's age as "Hamas-run".
    The impression it gives
A reader is invited to doubt even that the dead girl was seven.
    The context
No IOF statement in the article carries a comparable tag on its source. The tag works only to cast suspicion on a child's age.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“The Israel Defense Forces said that one strike on Saturday in Gaza City killed Mohammed Halawa”

    Show it in the article

  3. Headline goes beyond the article

    Serious

    “IDF targets two Hamas commanders”

    Why this matters
The headline states as fact that the IOF's targets were Hamas commanders, with no attribution.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes the identity of the two men is established, while the Palestinian deaths in the same line are only "said".
    The context
The body gives the identification only as what the IOF said. The headline drops that attribution and keeps the hedge only for the Palestinian dead.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“The Israel Defense Forces said that one strike on Saturday in Gaza City killed Mohammed Halawa”

    Written straight
