Three Palestinians were reportedly killed in an Israeli strike that the military said targeted a Hamas military wing operative at the Islamic University in Gaza City on Sunday. Shifa Hospital in Gaza City said it received three bodies and treated eight people who were wounded in the strike, and two sources at the Islamic University said those killed were administrative staff and the injured were students. Palestinian media identified the dead as Ashraf Dahlan, Shadi Abu Ataya, and Sami Baroud.

In response to a query by The Times of Israel, the IDF said it launched the strike on a Hamas military wing operative. “Following the identification of uninvolved individuals in the area, the munition was diverted to minimize harm to them,” the IDF said. (Ali Hassan/Flash90) Gaza’s Hamas-run Education Ministry condemned the strike and said that “the global silence regarding attacks on students and universities serves as encouragement for the continuation of these crimes.” “This strike occurs at a time when the higher education sector is facing total annihilation, with 95 percent of the buildings belonging to academic institutions having been damaged as a result of the war,” it continued.

Advertisement “This heinous assault is part of a continuous series of attacks on education; over the past six days, 10 students and educators have been killed by the occupation’s fire.” The strike came as Israel in recent months has increasingly , including numerous terrorists who took part in the Hamas-led October 7 atrocities, saying they posed a threat to Israeli forces. (Ilia YEFIMOVICH/AFP) According to the military, many of the recent strikes focused on Hamas operatives involved in building up the terror group’s force, as well as secret headquarters and Hamas’s civil control mechanisms in the Strip.

Hamas reportedly told a UN official earlier this month that it was prepared to carry out an October 7-style attack in Israel, the West Bank or abroad, following the IDF’s expansion past the Gaza ceasefire line and the Palestinian Authority’s cancellation of legislative elections in November. Meanwhile, implementation of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza has stalled, with Hamas refusing to disarm and Israel refusing to withdraw from any part of Gaza until that condition is met.

The Times of Israel's headline calls the strike's target a "Hamas terrorist" in its own voice, dropping the attribution its body gives. The same headline hedges three deaths that a hospital confirmed and the article itself names. The article also calls the people Israel has struck in recent months terror operatives and terrorists on the army's word, and sets this strike inside that pattern.

  1. Headline goes beyond the article

    Serious

    “targeting Hamas terrorist”

    Why this matters
The headline says the strike was "targeting Hamas terrorist" as fact, in the outlet's own voice, with no attribution.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes it is established that a Hamas terrorist was at the university and was the target of the strike.
    The context
The body gives this only as the military's claim, and university sources said the dead were administrative staff and the wounded were students. The army told other outlets the strike was under review.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“the military said targeted a Hamas military wing operative”

    • Le Monde (English) reported“the Israeli army said that it was currently under review”Israeli strike on Gaza university kills three (opens in a new tab)

    Show it in the article

    “Three reportedly killed”

    Why this matters
The headline puts "reportedly" on the three deaths while stating the army's unverified target as plain fact.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes the deaths are less certain than the army's claim about who it was aiming at.
    The context
Shifa Hospital received three bodies, the dead were named, and other outlets report the killing plainly. The headline doubts the confirmed deaths and not the unconfirmed claim.

Israeli strike on Gaza university kills three staff, hospital and university say; army says it targeted a Hamas operative.

  2. Labels people on one side's word

    Serious

    “targeted terror operatives in Gaza”

    Why this matters
In its own voice the outlet calls the people Israel has been striking in recent months "terror operatives", and sets this strike inside that pattern.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes those killed in Israel's recent strikes, and by extension this one, were established terror operatives.
    The context
The outlet's own earlier reporting shows these identifications come from the army, and the same reporting records children shot dead by Israeli troops in the same period. Here university sources said the dead were staff.

    How we know

    Show it in the article

    Written straight

The strike came as Israel has stepped up strikes in Gaza on people it says are Hamas operatives, some of whom it says took part in the 7 October attack.
