Fabian reports on the goals of the IDF’s operation. We also discuss the greater question of ongoing West Bank violence — from both sides. The Israeli Navy held a joint drill with the Hellenic Navy in the Mediterranean this week, the military said on Saturday. The drill involved Israeli missile boats and naval vessels from several Greek units, and the IDF said the forces “practiced a variety of operational scenarios,” including “identifying and thwarting threats in the maritime domain, sailing as a joint force, and sinking an enemy vessel using missile fire.”

Fabian weighs in on some of the motivations for this drill and whom it’s really aimed at. Check out The Times of Israel’s ongoing liveblog for more updates. The Times of Israel's podcast briefing reports that the Hebron operation displaced some 2,000 Palestinians, citing Israel's defence minister. It leaves out its own earlier reporting of evacuation orders ahead of demolitions and Netanyahu's vow to destroy the gunmen's neighbourhood. It never calls Hebron occupied.

  1. Drops what it reported before

    Minor

“has displaced some 2,000 Palestinians from their homes as of Saturday evening, according to Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz”

    Why this matters
The words 'has displaced' present the loss of 2,000 homes as a side effect of a military operation. The only source given is Israel's defence minister.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes the Palestinians left their homes incidentally during a search operation after the shooting.
    The context
The Times of Israel reported the day before that soldiers ordered Palestinians in Farsh al-Hawa to evacuate ahead of demolition. It also reported that Netanyahu vowed to 'destroy' the neighbourhood the gunmen came from. Reuters saw bulldozers demolishing homes, and B'Tselem warned of collective punishment. None of this appears in the briefing.

  2. Hedges the documented record

    Minor

“the southern West Bank city of Hebron”

    Why this matters
The briefing places Hebron in 'the southern West Bank' and never calls it occupied territory, here or anywhere else in the piece.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes an army operation that empties Palestinian homes as an ordinary security action inside Israel's own territory.
    The context
The ICJ has found Israel's occupation of the West Bank unlawful. Other outlets reporting the same operation describe Hebron as being in the occupied West Bank.
