IDF says troops found underground passageway next to Hebron ...

Emanuel (Mannie) Fabian is The Times of Israel's military correspondent

IDF troops have located an underground passageway adjacent to the home of one of the Palestinian gunmen who carried out Friday’s deadly shooting attack in the West Bank city of Hebron, the military says.

The military says the tunnel found in Hebron has no exit and is located deep within the West Bank city, not posing a threat to any Israeli settlements in the area.

The excavation is found to be approximately 15 meters deep and 75 centimeters wide, the army says.

Additionally, the IDF says that an “electronic device” found inside the tunnel has been taken for investigation.

The military says the tunnel was found during scans of over 500 buildings and structures in Hebron, amid an ongoing operation in the neighborhood where the two gunmen lived.

Left out here: Leaves out what changes the picture

The entry says the raid displaced some 3,000 Palestinians and describes it as scans of over 500 buildings. It never says that Israeli occupation forces were demolishing homes and businesses in Hebron, with at least one whole street flattened, or that troops took over Palestinian homes as barracks. Without this, a reader believes the displacement is a side effect of a search operation, when demolition and the seizure of homes were part of the raid itself.

How we know

So far during the operation, the IDF says it has apprehended some 50 suspects for questioning and seized just two guns.

In the attack on Friday, Hebron residents Mohammad Jaaba and Firas Jaaba opened fire on a checkpoint at the northern exit to the West Bank city, killing Staff Sgt. Ron Yonatan Roytman and Sgt. Yuval Shai Svilem and wounding three other troops. Both gunmen were shot dead by troops.

What we found (2)

The Times of Israel relays the army's account of a tunnel found in Hebron and says the raid has displaced some 3,000 Palestinians, but every account in the entry comes from the military and the displaced appear only as a number. It also never mentions that Israeli occupation forces demolished homes and businesses and took over Palestinian homes during the same raid, as other outlets reported.

    Minor

“The raid has displaced some 3,000 Palestinian residents of the area.”

    Why this matters
This sentence is the only place the people of Hebron appear. Every other claim in the entry is sourced to the military: the tunnel, its size, the device, the scans, the arrests.
    The impression it gives
A reader learns how the army describes the raid in detail, but hears nothing from the 3,000 people forced from their homes or from Hebron's officials.
    The context
Other outlets reported the raid through local voices as well. The BBC quoted Hebron's mayor on more than 1,000 displaced and on the homes, businesses and infrastructure targeted. The Times of Israel gives the displaced a figure and no voice.

    What is missing

The entry says the raid displaced some 3,000 Palestinians and describes it as scans of over 500 buildings. It never says that Israeli occupation forces were demolishing homes and businesses in Hebron, with at least one whole street flattened, or that troops took over Palestinian homes as barracks. Without this, a reader believes the displacement is a side effect of a search operation, when demolition and the seizure of homes were part of the raid itself.

What it gets right

  • “The raid has displaced some 3,000 Palestinian residents of the area.”

In its own voice the outlet calls the operation a raid and states that it displaced Palestinians, naming the harm and who caused it.

  • “Both gunmen were shot dead by troops.”

The killing is written plainly, with the actor named, not hidden behind a passive or a euphemism.

  • “apprehended some 50 suspects for questioning and seized just two guns”

The outlet sets the army's arrest figure against how little was found, giving the reader a measure of the raid's scale against its results.
