What we found (1)

Arutz Sheva reports army footage of a shootout near Hebron in which two Palestinian attackers killed two Israeli soldiers and were then shot dead. Each time the outlet describes the two men's deaths, it writes "eliminated" and never uses the word killed. Other outlets reporting the same event say plainly that the two men were killed.

  1. Writes the death out

    Severe

    “eliminated”

    Why this matters
The headline uses "eliminated" for the shooting dead of two Palestinian men.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes in from the first line that a target was removed, not that two people were shot dead.
    The context
The two men were shot dead by soldiers. Other reports of the same event use the word killed.

    How we know

    Show it in the article

    “Israeli forces eliminated two terrorists”

    Why this matters
The opening sentence repeats "eliminated" in the outlet's own voice while describing army footage of the shooting.
    The impression it gives
The footage shows an operation being completed, not two men being shot dead.
    The context
The footage shows soldiers killing the two attackers. The Jerusalem Post says the officers "killed them".

    How we know

    Show it in the article

“The gunfire eliminated the two terrorists.”

    Why this matters
This sentence makes "the gunfire" the subject and pairs it with "eliminated". The soldiers who fired drop out of the sentence, and so does the killing itself.
    The impression it gives
The deaths happened as an impersonal result of gunfire, not as soldiers shooting two men dead.
    The context
S4 and S5 show soldiers charging and opening fire. Soldiers shot the two men dead.

    How we know

    Show it in the article

“surrounded the terrorists and eliminated them”

    Why this matters
The closing sentence ends the article on "eliminated" once more. The last thing the reader takes away is a euphemism, not the death of two men.
    The impression it gives
The incident ended with a threat neutralised, with no human death named.
    The context
The soldiers killed both men. Other outlets name them as Mohammad and Firas Jaaba.
