ISTANBUL

The US declared Ibrahim Charara, Lebanon’s consul general in Detroit, Michigan, persona non grata, Lebanese media reported Saturday.

Lebanon’s Embassy in Washington told the newspaper Annahar that the US State Department had formally notified it of the decision to expel Charara.

Neither the US State Department nor Lebanon’s Foreign Ministry had issued an official statement on the matter.

The decision followed US media coverage of old social media posts attributed to Charara.

In a Nov. 2 report, the Washington Free Beacon cited a 2021 post that it said showed the diplomat “praised Hezbollah's 1983 suicide attack on the U.S. Marine Corps barracks, which killed 241 American service members.”

About this analysis

Anadolu Agency reports that the US has declared Lebanon's consul general in Detroit, Ibrahim Charara, persona non grata. It attributes the expulsion to Lebanese media and the Lebanese Embassy, and attributes the claims about his social media posts to the Washington Free Beacon. Nothing in the article misleads its reader.

What it gets right

  • “cited a 2021 post that it said showed the diplomat”

Anadolu attributes the reading of the post to the Washington Free Beacon. It does not state the allegation against a named diplomat as established fact.

  • “old social media posts attributed to Charara”

The outlet does not assert that Charara wrote the posts. It says only that they were attributed to him, which keeps an unverified claim about a named person as a claim.

  • “had issued an official statement on the matter”

The outlet tells the reader plainly that neither government had confirmed the decision publicly. This matches the headline's "Report" attribution.
