Two senior Iranian officials .

The report comes days after US national intelligence chief Jay Clayton warned in a memo sent to Secretary of State Marco Rubio that Iran has “substantially increased” its efforts to target Americans in the Middle East and beyond.

The unnamed Iranian officials, one of them a member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) tell the Times that the targeting of American officials was considered to be “fair game,” given the number of Iranian officials killed by the US and Israel.

Additionally, a US official tells the newspaper there is evidence that Tehran has operatives in the US who are “not just simply Iranian nationals.”

Clayton’s memo emerged shortly after the State Department announced it is reducing staff at the US embassies in Jordan, Lebanon, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Earlier in the week, Washington ordered non-essential US embassy staff and their families to leave Saudi Arabia, following increasing attacks by the Iran-backed Houthis.

What we found (1)

The Times of Israel tells its reader, in the headline and opening line, that two Iranian officials "confirm" Tehran is "preparing to target" US diplomats. Haaretz's account of the same New York Times report says the officials called US diplomats potential targets if the war escalates. By dropping that condition, the outlet turns a conditional warning into a confirmed plot.

  1. Leaves out what changes the picture

    Serious

“confirm to The New York Times that Tehran is preparing to target US diplomats and personnel”

    Why this matters
The words "confirm" and "is preparing to target" present the officials' remarks as confirmation of an active plan already under way. The sentence has no condition attached.
    The impression it gives
Iranian officials have admitted that Iran is now preparing attacks on US diplomats, which confirms the US intelligence memo.
    The context
Haaretz, reporting the same New York Times story, says the officials described US diplomats as among Iran's potential targets if the war escalates. That is a conditional warning, not an admission of a plot in preparation. The article leaves the condition out.

“2 Iranian officials confirm Tehran preparing to target US diplomats”

    Why this matters
The headline repeats the unconditional claim and uses "confirm". It ties the officials' words to the earlier US memo as though they verified it.
    The impression it gives
Iran's own officials have verified that an attack plan against US diplomats is in motion.
    The context
According to Haaretz's account of the same report, the officials named US personnel as potential targets in the event of escalation. The article's own S3 only says targeting was "considered to be fair game". Nothing in the body shows a confirmed plan in preparation.

    Written straight

Two senior Iranian officials told The New York Times that US diplomats and other American personnel would be among Iran's potential targets if the war escalates, calling them "fair game" given the Iranian officials killed by the US and Israel.
