Iranian FM: Another attack by the US won’t change our policies

Lazar Berman is The Times of Israel's diplomatic reporter

A return to military conflict by the US will not make Iran change its stance, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warns.

“These days there has been talk of a new war,” he says in a televised address. “But I am already thinking about what comes after the war.”

Left out here: Leaves out what changes the picture

The entry says only that 'there has been talk of a new war'. It never says that Trump told a Florida rally the day before that the US 'may do another little Epic Fury', or that US and Israeli militaries have drawn up plans for renewed strikes after the midterms. Without this, a reader may take Araghchi's remarks as unprompted defiance rather than a reply to a stated US threat.

How we know

“Whether there is war or not, our policies remain the same,” says Araghchi.

If the US and Israel attack again, he says, “they know full well that the result will be no different than what they experienced in the past.”

The management of the Strait of Hormuz will not return to what it was before the war, Araghchi insists: “Everyone must accept that fundamental and strategic changes have occurred in the region, and nothing will be the same as it was before… including the Strait of Hormuz.”

“The current war has changed everything,” says Araghchi. “We must accept that new realities have taken hold. The routes in the Strait of Hormuz will not be the same as the previous ones.”

What we found (1)

The Times of Israel reports Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi's televised remarks that a renewed US attack would not change Iran's policies and that the Strait of Hormuz will not return to its pre-war state. Every claim is attributed to Araghchi and quoted. The entry does not say that Trump told a Florida rally two days earlier that the US 'may do another little Epic Fury', or that US and Israeli militaries have reportedly drawn up plans for renewed strikes, a minor gap.

What it gets right

  • “If the US and Israel attack again”

The entry names the US and Israel as the parties whose attack is in question, rather than writing of a renewed war with no actor.

  • ““Whether there is war or not, our policies remain the same,” says Araghchi.”

Araghchi's position is quoted directly and attributed to him, not restated as the outlet's own claim or recast as a threat in the outlet's voice.
