Iran executes 3 men accused of carrying out operations for Israel, US during protests

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.1 finding

Iran executed three men on Sunday after they were convicted of carrying out operations for Israel and the US and taking part in armed unrest during anti-government protests in January, state media reported. The executions are the latest in a series Iran has carried out in recent months over the January protests, including those of people accused of links to Israel and the US. Hassan Dioband, Hamid Kazemi and Reza Zanganeh were accused of using firearms, grenades and Molotov cocktails, setting fire to public facilities and damaging an electricity substation in the city of Karaj, causing power outages in some areas, according to the judiciary.

The judiciary said Dioband was arrested on January 11 after investigations identified him as a suspect in attacks on public property and incitement to violence. Ten others accused of participating in the unrest under his supervision were subsequently arrested. Their executions were carried out after the Supreme Court upheld their sentences, while the other defendants received prison terms of 5 to 10 years. This image from video taken between January 9 and January 11, 2026, and verified by AP, shows bodies and mourners outside a morgue in Iran, following a crackdown on protests in Kahrizak, Tehran province. (UGC via AP, File) Bloody protests broke out late last year, then escalated into in January.

Iranian authorities reported more than 3,000 deaths in the unrest, attributing the violence to “terrorist acts” orchestrated by the United States and Israel. Advertisement Foreign-based non-governmental organizations, however, maintain that Iranian security forces fired on protesters and that the true death toll was much higher. In late February, the United States and Israel launched a joint attack against Iran, triggering a war in the Middle East that has settled into an uneasy lull.

Since then, arrests and executions have multiplied in Iran, linked both to the conflict and to the January protests. According to rights groups including Amnesty International, Iran executes more people each year than any country except China. In 2025, Iran executed at least 1,639 people, the largest number in any year since 1989, according to the NGOs Iran Human Rights and Together Against the Death Penalty. What we found (1)

The Times of Israel reports Iran's execution of three men and attributes the charges to the judiciary and state media. In its own narration it calls the January protests "mass anti-government rioting". Its own photo caption, which describes a crackdown, and the NGOs it cites, who say security forces fired on protesters, do not support that word.

  1. Uses a loaded word

    Minor

    “mass anti-government rioting”

    Why this matters
The Times of Israel calls the January demonstrations "mass anti-government rioting" in its own voice, with no attribution.
    The impression it gives
A reader comes away thinking the January events were chiefly riots by the protesters.
    The context
The article itself calls them protests elsewhere. Its own caption shows bodies at a morgue after a crackdown. It also reports NGOs saying Iranian security forces fired on protesters. Rioting is the Iranian authorities' framing of the events, and the article gives it in its own narration.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“Iranian security forces fired on protesters”
    • Elsewhere in the article“following a crackdown on protests”

    Show it in the article

What it gets right

  • “the United States and Israel launched a joint attack against Iran”

It names who started the war in the active voice rather than saying a war simply broke out.

  • “were accused of using firearms, grenades and Molotov cocktails”

It keeps the charges as accusations and attributes them to the judiciary rather than stating them as fact.

  • “maintain that Iranian security forces fired on protesters and that the true death toll was much higher”

It sets the NGOs' account against the Iranian authorities' claim of "terrorist acts" instead of leaving the official version unchallenged.
