About this analysis

Sky News reports that a temporary superintendent with Devon and Cornwall Police has pleaded not guilty to a sexual assault charge and will stand trial in February 2028. It attributes the allegation throughout, quotes the charge wording, and records his plea and suspension. Nothing in it misleads the reader.

What it gets right

  • “entered a not-guilty plea at Taunton Crown Court”

Sky News gives the defendant's plea plainly, so the reader knows the allegation is contested and unproven.

  • “The charge alleges that on 10 June 2022 in Exeter he”

The article attributes the allegation to the charge and quotes its wording, rather than stating the alleged act as fact.

  • “A senior police officer accused of sexual assault will stand trial.”

The opening line keeps the word accused, and the headline matches it by calling it an allegation, so neither goes beyond what the body reports.
