Following Storm Beolo this weekend, the Met Office has put two yellow wind warnings in place for western areas of England and parts of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland on Monday evening into Tuesday, with the potential for ongoing disruption. The forecaster has said the strong winds are likely to cause travel disruption and power cuts, making it difficult for students to attend school. Another yellow Met Office warning for strong winds and potentially damaging gusts is in place from 3am on Tuesday until midnight for most of Scotland and the far north-east of Northern Ireland.

What we found (1)

The Daily Express reports school closures in Scotland, mostly across the Western Isles, as the Met Office issues wind warnings after Storm Beolo. The headline says "UK schools closed", but every closure the article names is in Scotland, so a reader may expect wider closures than the body reports. Otherwise the article sources its facts to the Met Office and the councils and does not mislead.

What it gets right

  • “"All schools in the Western Isles will be closed to pupils on Tuesday, October 27, with high winds forecast at the time of the school commute."”

The Express quotes the council's own announcement, so readers can see who made the closure decision and why.

  • “"The decision to close schools has been taken to prioritise pupil safety, considering the timing of the highest forecast wind speed and potential coastal flooding from high tide levels."”

It gives the council's stated reasons, wind timing and coastal flooding risk, in the council's words.
