They said: “It is inappropriate to discuss matters of intelligence, and we will not comment on specific threat reporting or force protection measures.

“US European Command remains vigilant and continuously assesses the security environment across the European theater.” Advertisement Last month, Britain was feared to have been targeted by Iranian terror cells after a serious security breach at RAF Fairford. Five men in their early 20s were arrested on suspicion of terrorism near the base in the early hours of September 27 after cops were alerted to three “suspicious vehicles”. Fairford was home to a number of Trump’s B-1 bombers at the time which have been involved in bombing missions over Iran .

Experts say this could have been why the base was targeted. Responding to the security breach fears, Trump pulled all of his American bombers from the base over fears of an Iranian attack. Advertisement The US president said there were “some threats” but US officials could not comment on whether they were imminent. Marco Rubio, US Secretary of State, said he didn’t view the breach as the only reason why the US withdrew the bombers from RAF Fairford.

RECOMMENDED STORIES US Vice-President JD Vance added that the decision was taken “out of an abundance of caution” over suspected Iranian plots. The RAF only realised the bombers were on the move when the US Air Force crews of the departing B-1B Lancer bombers logged flight plans with air traffic control. 1 comment 1

The Sun's headline turns a German news site's report of an Israeli warning that Tehran could target US bases into a confirmed Iranian plot, dropping every attribution the body gives. In its opening line the Sun also gives the alleged plot an aim to kill troops that no source in the article states, and calls it chilling in its own voice.

  1. Headline goes beyond the article

    Serious

    “Chilling Iranian plot”

    Why this matters
The headline states the 'Iranian plot' as fact and drops every attribution the body gives: Israel's warning, the German news site and the unnamed officials.

A reader believes an Iranian plot has been established and exposed.
    The context
The body rests on a Wirtschaftswoche report citing unnamed Western officials about concerns Israel's intelligence services passed on. That is a warning about a possibility, not a revealed plot.
