Tropical Storm Pena forms well south of Hawaii

No framing issues found.

MIAMI (AP) — Tropical Storm Pena formed Friday in the Pacific Ocean, well south of the Hawaiian islands. Pena had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (72 kph) and was centered about 650 miles (1,046 kilometers) southeast of South Point, Hawaii, and about 1,350 miles (2,173 kilometers) east-southeast of Johnston Island, according to an advisory from the Miami-based U.S. National Hurricane Center. Pena was moving west at 12 mph (19 kph). It was forecast to strengthen over the next day or so, then have no significant change through next week.

The system is expected to remain offshore of Hawaii. No watches or warnings were in effect, and no hazards were affecting land. The Pacific Ocean has had an active hurricane season due in part to El Niño.

About this analysis

The Associated Press reports that Tropical Storm Pena formed far south of Hawaii, giving its wind speed, position and track from a National Hurricane Center advisory. It says the storm is expected to stay offshore and that no watches, warnings or land hazards were in effect. Nothing in this short weather bulletin misleads its reader. It reports a weak storm far out at sea, not an extreme weather event with reported harm.

What it gets right

  • “according to an advisory from the Miami-based U.S.”

The AP ties every figure on the storm's strength and position to the National Hurricane Center advisory, so the reader knows where the numbers come from.

  • “No watches or warnings were in effect, and no hazards were affecting land.”

The AP tells the reader plainly that the storm posed no threat to land, so it neither inflates nor plays down the danger.
