Iran’s resolve challenges US-Israeli war plans, reshaping regional dynamics: Analysts

No framing issues found.

Journalist and author Robert Fantina and political analyst Sakina Datoo discuss the implications of the US midterm elections for Washington’s policy toward Iran, the prospects of renewed aggression, and Tehran’s military posture. In a Saturday interview with Press TV, Fantina says the repeated US violations of diplomatic commitments have left Iran with little reason to trust Washington, pointing to the collapse of the JCPOA and attacks launched amid negotiations.

He argues that Iran has spent two decades preparing for potential US aggression and remains capable of defending itself. “That is a fantasy that exists only in his own head,” he says, dismissing President Donald Trump’s claims of having destroyed Iran’s military capabilities. Datoo, for her part, argues that the Democrats’ gains in Congress reflect growing public opposition to another war against Iran but cautions against expecting a fundamental shift in US policy.

She says both major parties remain influenced by powerful interests and have historically pursued hostile policies toward Tehran. “When it comes to their equation with Iran, there is not much difference,” she says, adding that electoral developments do not necessarily translate into a change in Washington’s approach to the Islamic Republic. On the prospects of renewed aggression, both analysts question Washington’s ability to secure its objectives through military action.

Fantina says the US campaign has failed to achieve its stated aims, arguing that Tehran is in a position to shape the terms of any future negotiations. He also points to growing domestic opposition to the war in the United States, saying elected officials will face pressure to respond to public demands for an end to hostilities and Washington’s support for Israel. Addressing Iran’s warning of a geographically unrestricted response to any renewed aggression, Datoo says it extends beyond the Strait of Hormuz to military bases and facilities supporting attacks on Iran.

She argues that Tehran seeks to end the US military presence in West Asia and sees its strengthened military capabilities as key to deterrence. “When Iran says something, they mean it,” she says, expressing confidence in Iran’s ability to shape the region’s future while warning of the risk of further escalation.
