Hebron municipality: Some 5,000 residents in city

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.6 findings

The Hebron municipality said on Wednesday that the Israel Defense Forces was continuing its operation in the city for a sixth consecutive day, following Friday’s shooting attack at the entrance to Hebron in which Palestinian gunmen killed two IDF soldiers. According to a statement by the municipality cited by the Palestinian news agency WAFA, some 780 families, comprising around 5,000 people, have either been evacuated from their homes or remain trapped inside them due to the operation, which includes house searches and the closure of neighborhoods across the city.

Left out here: Leaves out what changes the picture

The article never says troops ordered residents of the neighbourhood to pack up and leave, or that the UN warned the operation raises serious concerns of ethnic cleansing. Without this, a reader believes the 5,000 people were caught up in house searches rather than forcibly displaced by an operation the UN has warned about.

How we know

The military said Wednesday its operation in Hebron was continuing, despite reports that the IDF told Israel’s political leadership days ago that the objectives there have been met. The army said troops and Border Police officers found an M16 assault rifle during the recent scans in Hebron, bringing the total to three firearms found in the raid that began six days ago. In other villages in the Hebron area, Border Police officers apprehended six wanted Palestinians overnight, including suspected Hamas operatives, who are allegedly involved in terror activity, according to the IDF and police.

According to Palestinian reports, the IDF arrested two Palestinians, a father and son, after settlers attacked their home. “Upon arrival, the troops acted to remove the suspects involved in the assault. After they refused to leave for an extended period and physically resisted the troops, a closed military zone order was issued to disperse the gathering.

Two Palestinians were arrested. The suspects continued to resist the troops during their arrest. The use of violence is unacceptable. The soldiers’ conduct is being reviewed and will be addressed in accordance with the findings,” the IDF said. قوات الاحـ"تلال تعتدي بالضرب على عيسى مسعف ونجله رامي في مسافر يطا جنوب الخليل، وتعتقلهما عقب هجوم مستـ"وطنين على مسكنهما والاعتداء على عائلتهما. pic.twitter.com/LG7axlsnel — فلسطين بوست (@PalpostN) October 27, 2026 Advertisement Palestinian media outlets also reported on Tuesday that two Palestinians were injured in a settler attack in the South Hebron Hills, in the southern West Bank.

The Times of Israel reports the burning of three cars in Umm Safa with no attacker, though the post it embeds names settler militias, and it never says Hebron is occupied while reporting troops displacing thousands there. It sources the Palestinian death toll to the PA and follows it with the army's claim that most were gunmen, while stating the Israeli toll as plain fact. Its headline calls the displaced 'impacted', and the army's account of a filmed beating gets most of the space and the last word.

  1. Hides who did it

    Severe

“three vehicles were set on fire in the early morning hours of Tuesday in Umm Safa”

    Why this matters
The words 'were set on fire' report the arson in the passive voice and name nobody who lit the fires.
    The impression it gives
A reader comes away thinking it is unknown or unsaid who burned the cars in Umm Safa.
    The context
The post the article embeds straight after this sentence says settler militias attacked Umm Safa and burned several vehicles. The article had the actor in its own material and left it out of the sentence it wrote.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“مليشيات المستوطنين تهاجم قرية أم صفا”

    Show it in the article

    Written straight

Palestinian media reported that settlers attacked Umm Safa, near Ramallah, early on Tuesday and set three vehicles on fire.

  2. Doubts one side's dead and not the other's

    Serious

“according to the PA health ministry”

    Why this matters
The words 'according to the PA health ministry' attach a source caveat to the count of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces and settlers.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the Palestinian toll as one party's figure, open to doubt.
    The context
Two sentences later the Israeli toll is given with no source at all, so only the Palestinian dead are held at arm's length.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“69 civilians and Israeli security personnel have been killed in terror attacks”

    Show it in the article

“the vast majority of them were gunmen killed in exchanges of fire, rioters who clashed with troops, or terrorists carrying out attacks”

    Why this matters
The article follows the Palestinian toll at once with the army's labels for the dead: gunmen, rioters, terrorists.
    The impression it gives
A reader is led to think most of the 1,100 Palestinians killed were combatants or attackers.
    The context
The article offers no evidence for the army's claim and no Palestinian or independent response to it, while the Israeli dead in the next sentence get no such recasting.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“More than 1,100 Palestinians have been killed”

    Show it in the article

“69 civilians and Israeli security personnel have been killed in terror attacks in Israel and the West Bank”

    Why this matters
The article states the Israeli death toll, and calls the attacks 'terror attacks', in its own voice with no source.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the Israeli figure as established fact and the Palestinian figure as a claim.
    The context
The Palestinian figure in S27 is sourced and then disputed by the army, while this figure carries no attribution. The two tolls are held to different standards.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“according to the PA health ministry”

    Show it in the article

  3. Hedges the documented record

    Serious

“the northern exit to the West Bank city”

    Why this matters
The article calls Hebron 'the West Bank city' and nowhere says the West Bank is occupied.
    The impression it gives
A reader sees a military operation inside an ordinary city, with no sign that the troops are an occupying force.
    The context
The ICJ ruled the occupation of the West Bank unlawful, and other outlets reporting this same raid call Hebron an occupied West Bank city. The article turns on an occupying army displacing thousands, yet the word occupied never appears.

    How we know

    Show it in the article

    Written straight

In the attack on Friday, two Hebron residents opened fire on a checkpoint at the northern exit to the occupied West Bank city.

  4. Uses a loaded word

    Minor

    “still impacted by IDF operation”

    Why this matters
The headline says 5,000 residents are 'impacted', a vague word for people pushed out of their homes or shut inside them.
    The impression it gives
A headline reader thinks of disruption or inconvenience.
    The context
The body says these people were removed from their homes or are trapped inside them.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“evacuated from their homes or remain trapped inside them”

    Show it in the article

  5. One side gets the space

    Minor

“The IDF said that troops were dispatched to the area following a report that an Israeli civilian had been assaulted, and that the Palestinian suspects resisted the forces.”

    Why this matters
The article gives the army's account of the beating, calling the father and son 'suspects' who resisted, across seven sentences, and closes the passage with it.
    The impression it gives
A reader leaves the passage with the army's version as the fuller and final account.
    The context
The Palestinian account, that troops arrested the father and son after settlers attacked their home, gets one line. The men themselves are named only in an untranslated Arabic post.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“after settlers attacked their home”

    Show it in the article

  6. Leaves out what changes the picture

    Minor

    What is missing

The article never says troops ordered residents of the neighbourhood to pack up and leave, or that the UN warned the operation raises serious concerns of ethnic cleansing. Without this, a reader believes the 5,000 people were caught up in house searches rather than forcibly displaced by an operation the UN has warned about.
