The article puts West Bank tensions down to the elections alone. It never mentions the surge of settler attacks on Palestinian olive harvesters that Haaretz itself reported this month and that the BBC gives as context for this shooting. Without it the reader believes election worries are the only source of tension around the attack.

Haaretz passes on Smotrich's party's label of 'illegally constructed' Palestinian buildings and a retaliatory demolition order, with nothing on the permit regime behind that label. It never calls the West Bank occupied, and its headline does not say who killed the two Palestinian men. It also prints the army's hint that an AFP photographer's quick arrival is suspect, with no reply from AFP.

    Serious

    “illegally constructed Palestinian buildings”

    Why this matters
Haaretz repeats Smotrich's party's label for the buildings it is ordering destroyed and adds nothing about the permit system behind that label.
    The impression it gives
The reader takes it that these Palestinians built unlawfully and that their buildings are fair game.
    The context
The 'illegal' label comes from the occupying power's own permit regime, under which Palestinian building permits are almost never granted. The article gives no permit context at all.

  2. Hedges the documented record

    Minor

“in a shooting attack near Hebron in the West Bank”

    Why this matters
Haaretz places the attack 'in the West Bank' and never uses the word occupied, here or anywhere in the article.
    The impression it gives
The reader takes the West Bank as an ordinary place where Israeli forces, checkpoints and Israeli travellers are simply present.
    The context
The West Bank is occupied territory, and the ICJ has found the occupation unlawful. The BBC's report of the same shooting says 'occupied West Bank'.

“prepare for a full lockdown of the entire West Bank”

    Why this matters
Haaretz reports an Israeli prime minister ordering a lockdown of a whole territory and its millions of Palestinians, and never says by what status he holds that power.
    The impression it gives
The reader sees a lockdown of the entire West Bank as a routine domestic security order.
    The context
Israel imposes it as the occupying power over Palestinians who have no vote in the government ordering it. The ICJ has found that occupation unlawful and the settlements illegal. Anadolu's report on the same event gives that legal status.

  3. Hides who did it

    Minor

    “Two Palestinian assailants killed”

    Why this matters
The headline names who wounded the Israelis but turns the two Palestinian deaths passive, with no killer named.
    The impression it gives
A headline reader learns that the two men died but not who killed them.
    The context
The body says the army killed them, and Anadolu's report says they were shot by the Israeli army.

  4. Prints an insinuation against a journalist unanswered

    Minor

“the military will inspect the swift arrival of an AFP photographer to the scene”

    Why this matters
Haaretz passes on the army's suggestion that a press photographer's quick arrival is suspect, with no response from AFP or the photographer.
    The impression it gives
The reader is left suspecting that the AFP photographer knew of the attack in advance.
    The context
Nothing in the article supports that suspicion, and Haaretz runs the same photographer's AFP pictures in its own captions. No reply from AFP appears.
