Seventy in a year. On 22 July 2026 the British Muslim Trust, the organisation the Government appointed to monitor anti-Muslim hate, published its count: 70 attacks on mosques and Muslim places of worship across the UK in twelve months. One every five days. Nine of them were in London. One mosque in Birmingham was attacked three times. The recorded incidents run from arson at Peacehaven Mosque in East Sussex to bacon left at a Bristol mosque during Ramadan. The Home Office recorded 3,199 anti-Muslim hate crime offences in England and Wales in the year to March 2025, up from 2,690 the year before.
The wave. The eleven weeks from late April to mid July 2026 were the sharpest stretch of that year, not an exception to it. There were at least nine documented attacks, plots and threats against Muslims in Britain and Ireland: Ishmail Hussein stabbed at his home in Southwark on the morning of the Golders Green attack; a family home in Blackburn firebombed with children inside; five people wounded in Edinburgh, two of them leaving prayers at Broomhouse Mosque; the Al Madinah Hall in Dublin set alight in daylight; a worshipper in his 50s beaten outside the Noor Ul Islam Mosque in Leyton; a replica mosque burned on a bonfire in Moygashel under a sign reading 'end the threat of radical Islam'; twelve arrests over a far-right terror threat to a 15,000-strong Islamic festival in Suffolk, three on suspicion of conspiracy to murder; an emailed bomb threat to a Birmingham school with 450 pupils on the last day of term; and a 14-year-old charged over an alleged plot to attack two mosques in Sutton. Every charge is an allegation until decided by the courts.
The protection gap. After the Golders Green attack of 29 April, the state did what it should do after terror: a terrorist incident declared within hours, the national threat level raised to severe, and on 13 July a package of more than £250 million over three years with over 500 additional officers to protect Jewish communities. That response was right. For the wave above there has been no COBR announcement, no threat-level communication, and no new funding: the mosque security scheme stands at up to £40 million for a single year, for a community of almost four million. That money is not arriving either. The British Muslim Trust says mosques wait months for it, some as long as 18 months, and that applications are refused with no explanation given. Its chief executive, Akeela Ahmed, says mosques are waiting 'while living in fear of another attack, because of the backlog'. The Trust wants the evidence requirements reduced and the fund devolved so it moves faster. Sikh organisations say they are guarding their gurdwaras themselves.
