Araghchi, Oman discuss peace

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi discussed regional developments and diplomatic efforts to promote peace and stability during a phone call Thursday morning, the Iranian government said.

The talks came amid escalating tensions over a US naval blockade and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, as Qatar continued mediating between Washington and Tehran.

Iran said Monday it was still exchanging messages with the US through mediators and that reopening the waterway depended on Washington ending the blockade.

The US and Israel launched attacks against Iran on Feb. 28, prompting Tehran to retaliate against Israel and US assets in the region before a ceasefire was reached in April.

Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz on June 18, but its implementation stalled over disagreements concerning security arrangements.

Mediation and indirect talks

Khabar Online said Iraqichi’s telephone contact with Oman’s Minister of Foreign Affairs came as part of Tehran’s ongoing diplomatic consultations with regional countries to prevent a return to military confrontations and achieve a political solution. Khabar Online added that Iraqichi also spoke by phone on Tuesday with Abd-al-Aty, Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, and both sides stressed the necessity of flexibility by the involved parties and returning to negotiations. Khabar Online said diplomatic efforts to end the Iran-US war continued through Qatar and Pakistan mediation.

Khabar Online cited a Reuters report from November 2 saying Tehran and Washington’s indirect talks, mediated by Qatar, ended without a definite result, but contacts and exchange of proposals between the sides continued. Khabar Online said the main thrust of the proposals discussed in those negotiations has been to lift the blockade on Iran’s ports and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Hormuz stakes and next steps

Trend News Agency said Iran and Oman explored diplomatic avenues to ease regional tensions during a telephone conversation on Thursday, November 5, between Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi. Trend News Agency said the latest escalation in US-Iran relations began on July 8, when the US armed forces launched several waves of strikes against Iranian territory, reportedly in response to an attack on a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. Trend News Agency said US President Donald Trump announced that the ceasefire with Iran had been terminated, and Tehran began striking US facilities in Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Oman.

Trend News Agency said the conflict has brought maritime trade through the Strait of Hormuz to a standstill. A News said Iran told mediators that reopening the waterway depended on Washington ending the blockade, tying the diplomatic track directly to Strait of Hormuz access.
