Hospital burned in Lebanon
The Israeli army set fire to the Mays al-Jabal Governmental Hospital in the Marjeyoun District of southern Lebanon, with Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health describing the act as a “barbaric crime” and a “war crime.” The Perspectives Med report says the Israeli army set the hospital on fire on Friday, and it quotes the ministry saying the occupiers “have now set it completely on fire to deprive the southern populations of their most fundamental human rights to hospitalization and health care.”
The same report adds that the ministry demanded that “the international community, the World Health Organization, and the International Committee of the Red Cross immediately break their suspicious silence and hold the occupying power accountable for its repeated crimes against the Lebanese health sector.” In the broader toll cited by Lebanese health authorities, Perspectives Med says the cumulative toll of the Israeli aggression against Lebanon from March 2 to September 17 reached 4,386 martyrs and 12,407 injured, and that the total toll since October 8, 2023, stands at 8,953 martyrs and 30,643 injured.
Lebanon vows accountability
Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health condemned the burning of the hospital as a “barbaric crime” and a “war crime,” after the facility had been rehabilitated and equipped with modern medical gear following prior conflicts to serve border communities. Perspectives Med quotes a parliamentary defense committee member describing the events around Deir Mimas as “an attack on all of Lebanon,” and says the incident should prompt authorities to end “futile negotiations with the enemy” and halt “the flow of concessions.”
The same Perspectives Med report frames the hospital arson as part of a wider pattern, quoting the ministry that “targeting medical institutions and health personnel constitutes a war crime in its own right.” In parallel, 8AM Media reports that AFP said Lebanese sources had reported the Israeli army set fire to the government hospital in the town of Mays al-Jabal in the Marjeyoun district, and that it remains unclear whether the incident caused any casualties or how much damage was inflicted.
Framework agreement and wider attacks
8AM Media says the hospital fire came as Lebanon and Israel reached a framework agreement in June, mediated by the United States, which includes the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces and the deployment of the Lebanese army in areas vacated by Israeli forces. Perspectives Med reports that correspondents in southern Lebanon said Israeli aggressions continued, including a drone dropping explosive drums on the locality of al-Mansouri in the Tyre district and artillery pounding the localities of Kfar Tebnit and Wadi al-Salouqi.
The same Perspectives Med account says fighter-bombers targeted the locality of Qantara and the area surrounding Kfar Tebnit, while it also notes that on Thursday the Lebanese Ministry of Health announced the cumulative toll from March 2 to September 17 and the total toll since October 8, 2023. In addition to the hospital incident, AFP-linked reporting in 8AM Media states that the Israeli army had been using the hospital as a military position before setting it on fire on Friday, while the report adds that it was unclear whether casualties occurred.
