Alberta votes on separation

Voters in Canada’s oil-rich Alberta province were deciding on Monday whether to begin a process that could lead to independence, testing national unity as Canadians rally against U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war and threats to claim Canada as the 51st US state.

More than 1.35 million Albertans, or 43% of eligible voters, cast advance or special ballots ahead of Monday’s referendum, and polls close at 8 p.m. local time.

Alberta, home to most of Canada’s proven oil reserves, will decide whether to remain a province or begin the legal process toward a future referendum on separation, with results expected in the hours afterward.

Prime Minister Mark Carney urged Albertans to deliver a decisive vote for unity, telling a rally Friday in Edmonton, where he grew up, "Vote like Canada's future depends on it because it does," and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith called the referendum despite opposing independence.

Alberta’s vote also came as a grass fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright suddenly shifted into a military training exercise, killing four service members and injuring 39, including 19 critically.

Carney, Smith and the stakes

Carney warned that the referendum comes at the "worst possible time" and urged Albertans not to use their votes merely to send Ottawa a message.

Smith cited a poll showing just 22% support for separation, a figure she said was still too high, while she said the vote was called despite her opposition to independence.

Carney also tied the referendum to external pressure, telling voters that "Vote like Canada's future depends on it because it does," as he campaigned in Edmonton.

Smith said she opposed separation but defended the process as giving the province’s residents a chance to have their say, even after a court blocked the pro-separation petition for failing to consult indigenous First Nations.

Separatist leader Jeff Rath said federal COVID-19 vaccine mandates drove him toward independence, and Chief Sheldon Sunshine of Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation condemned meetings with U.S. State Department officials as "absolutely treasonous to the people of Canada, people of Alberta."

Independence debate and consequences

The referendum is not a direct vote for independence, and Alberta will decide whether to remain a province or begin the legal process toward a future referendum on separation. Alberta’s election authority says ballots for question 10 will be counted first, with results expected in the early hours of Tuesday, and the pre-referendum period has included concerns about manipulated AI content. Aengus Bridgman, director of the Media Ecosystem Observatory at McGill University, warned that "A very likely result of this referendum is going to be a community that sees this election as stolen or at least unfair."

Alberta’s separatist movement is led by Mitch Sylvestre, a gun shop owner from the town of Bonnyville, and Jeffrey Rath, a lawyer based in Calgary, both members of the Alberta Prosperity Project. Chris Scott, founder of pro-separatist group Let's Talk Alberta, said, "The key is the conversation has started and it needs to continue," as the vote tested whether separatist momentum would reshape provincial politics even if Albertans reject the proposal.
