Prime Air Goes National

Amazon says its Prime Air drone delivery service will expand to nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026, a sixfold increase from its current footprint.

plans to reach nearly 500 cities and towns in the United States by the end of 2026

About AmazonAbout Amazon

The company says Prime Air offers millions of items by drone at everyday low prices, with deliveries in as fast as 30 minutes, and that it has already delivered hundreds of thousands of packages to customers by drone this year.

Amazon says Prime Air currently operates from 11 delivery sites across 10 metro areas, including Tolleson, Arizona; Ruskin, Florida; Kansas City, Kansas; and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and it plans to launch soon in the Chicago, Syracuse, Cleveland, Atlanta, and Boise metro areas.

Prime Air’s service is integrated into Amazon’s existing shopping experience, with customers able to select drone delivery during checkout and confirm their delivery point when placing their first drone delivery order.

Amazon says its drones use onboard cameras and sensors for navigation and obstacle detection, and that its Detect-and-Avoid system continuously monitors the airspace and environment around the drone.

Safety, Fees, and Limits

Amazon says Prime Air holds Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Part 135 certification, and it describes the Detect-and-Avoid system as enabling drones to independently see and make real-time decisions while in flight.

The company says Prime Air is limited to packages that weigh 5 pounds or less, and that nearly all items 5 pounds or less that fit in a large shoebox can be delivered by drone.

Prime members receive free ultrafast drone delivery as an exclusive perk on orders $50 or more, while Prime members with orders under $50 pay $2.99 and customers without Prime pay $4.99.

Amazon says once the drone arrives at the preferred delivery point, it checks to confirm there are no people, pets, or vehicles in the way before safely delivering the package.

In its announcement, Amazon also said Prime Air drones can operate in light rain and a range of temperatures, and that the service is designed to operate responsibly with safety as the top priority.

Growth Meets Scrutiny

Amazon’s expansion plan comes as regulators investigate incidents involving Prime Air drones, including a probe after two Amazon drones collided with a crane in Tolleson, Arizona, and an FAA probe after a drone snapped an internet cable while ascending from a customer’s yard in Waco, Texas.

In a March internal meeting described by CNBC, David Carbon said, "At the time, we were detecting these cranes above the industry standard," and he added, "we found in the real world the performance just wasn't good enough and let me tell you, that was a humbling experience."

CNBC also reported that residents in some markets continue to raise concerns about drone noise and privacy and how those issues could hurt property values.

Amazon said it believes one of its drones came into contact with an object extending above the roof of a moving vehicle in Darlington, England, and that no injuries were reported.

Amazon’s stated goal is to scale Prime Air beyond its current markets, with the company saying it plans to reach customers in nearly 500 cities and towns by the end of 2026 while continuing to expand its drone delivery footprint.
