Sudan Accuses Ethiopia Of Aiding RSF As Clashes Escalate Near Kemak

The Sudanese army accused the Ethiopian government of helping the Rapid Support Forces and enabling them to launch attacks on Sudan from inside Ethiopian territory, and Addis Ababa responded by accusing Khartoum of aiding Tigray People's Liberation Front fighters and targeting the border town of Kemak between the two countries.

Al Jazeera’s director in Addis Ababa, Mohammed Taha Tokol, said this was the first time Addis Ababa responded to Sudan's accusations with similar charges.

The Al Jazeera correspondent in Khartoum, Al-Taher Al-Mardi, said the past days witnessed intensive drone attacks in which the RSF targeted major cities such as Kemak and Kizan.

In March, the Foreign Ministry held a press conference accusing Ethiopia of openly helping and opening its lands to the RSF fighters who attack the Blue Nile State, and the correspondent said the Sudanese army presented photos and technical data claiming a drone departed from the Bahir Dar airport in Ethiopia and struck Khartoum airport.

Clashes between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces and its ally, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North, escalated in Blue Nile State in the southeast of Sudan, while 7 people were killed in North and South Kordofan states.

In Ed Damazin, Blue Nile Governor Ahmed Al-Amla said security conditions are under control and that the regular forces “will not allow any threat to the security and stability of the region,” calling on citizens to be reassured and to rely on information issued by official sources.

The 4th Infantry Division of the Sudanese Army in Ed Damazin announced the movement of the Elite Brigade toward the Bakori axis, saying, “The brigade moved with resolve and full readiness to fight and to bolster the advance of the armed forces and complete the expulsion of the Rapid Support Forces militia.”

Meanwhile, the Dar Hamra Emergency Room said four civilians were killed in a ground attack by the Rapid Support Forces on the Qalaa area in North Kordofan State, and it published their names while calling on humanitarian organizations and the Sudanese Red Crescent to intervene urgently.

The Sudanese Doctors Network said three people were killed and others injured in an attack by a drone belonging to the Rapid Support Forces on the market in the town of Al-Dolong in South Kordofan State, and it said the drone also targeted trucks at the city’s entrance carrying consumer goods to the Al-Dolong market.

The network condemned attacks on civilian facilities, markets, and vehicles and trucks loaded with food and basic commodities, and it considered these attacks a violation of international humanitarian law and a direct threat to civilians’ lives.

The sources also tied the border dispute to the wider war, noting that since April 2023 Sudan has been at war between the army and the RSF, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and about 13 million displaced, according to UN and international estimates.

Alongside the fighting, Ethiopia’s advisor for East Africa affairs, Gitatsho Reda, denied Sudanese accusations and asked Sudan to repatriate 50,000 refugees of the Tigray ethnic group living in Gedaref city, while Tokol said among them are dozens of armed groups that operate within an axis hostile to Ethiopia.
