Carroll details 2021 assault
Andy Carroll revealed that he was sexually assaulted by a man in 2021 at his home, and he said the incident took place during his second spell with his hometown club Newcastle. Carroll described the episode in his autobiography titled 'Owning it', and he said he decided to include it "at the very last minute" after discussing it with his girlfriend Lou Teasdale.
Carroll said he called the police and recalled being "sobbing" in the arms of his children's nanny. Carroll said the unnamed attacker was found guilty of sexual offences and placed on the sex offender register, and he said the perpetrator was jailed for three years.
Court and lasting trauma
Carroll said he testified in court, and he described the process as "humiliating and embarrassing and absolutely horrendous". Carroll said the assault affected "every facet of my life," and he said he would think about it every day, making it difficult to focus on anything else, including football.
Carroll said "The trauma of what happened to me hasn't gone away," and he said he is still coping with its impact. Carroll said he was automatically granted anonymity as a victim of sexual assault, and he chose to make the details public in his book 'Owning it'.
Why he went public
Carroll said he wrote "I was sexually assaulted, there I said it," and he said only a few people knew about it before now. Carroll said he and Lou spent a lot of time discussing whether to mention the assault in the book, and he said he avoided his publisher for so long that they probably suspected he got cold feet.

Carroll said he hoped that talking about it would help just one person, and he wrote, "And if me talking about it helps just one person then good, it will have been worth it." Carroll said he is now a player/co-owner of non-league club Dagenham & Redbridge, and he said he joined Dagenham in July 2025.
