Anthropic’s $10B compute deal

Anthropic PBC has closed a US$10 billion computing capacity agreement with Volta Infra Holdings Ltd., a cloud infrastructure startup backed by Nvidia, to secure data center capacity for a six-year term.

Volta announced on Tuesday that it had closed a US$10 billion deal

Bloomberg reported that Volta’s $10 billion deal is carried out in collaboration with Bitdeer Technologies Group, using facilities located in Norway, and that Volta CEO Ricard Boada declined to reveal the client’s name.

Volta said the Norwegian data center offers 133 megawatts of capacity and will be equipped with Nvidia’s Vera Rubin chips, while Bitdeer’s Tydal subsidiary signed a 16-year colocation lease and services agreement covering 121 megawatts of critical IT capacity.

Bitdeer said the agreement represents approximately $4.7 billion in scheduled payments over the initial 16-year term, with an eight-year renewal option that could increase the total to about $8 billion.

The deal is backed by credit support expected to total approximately $1.3 billion in letters of credit arranged by affiliates of J.P. Morgan and another global financial institution, according to the reporting.

Bitdeer pivots beyond Bitcoin

Bitdeer’s Norway expansion ties its AI infrastructure push to a longer-term revenue model, with Cointelegraph describing a 16-year lease valued at as much as $4.7 billion to secure AI and high-performance computing data center capacity.

Under the agreement, Bitdeer will provide 121 megawatts of IT capacity at its Tydal, Norway AI data center to a tenant identified only as a subsidiary of Volta Infra, and the facility is configured to support Nvidia GPU-based AI workloads.

Cointelegraph also reported that Bitdeer shares jumped about 8% in early Nasdaq trading following the announcement, reflecting investor reaction to the company’s continued expansion into AI infrastructure and data centers.

The reporting links the lease to a broader shift in crypto mining firms repurposing data center capacity from cryptocurrency mining to AI applications, and it notes that Bitdeer plans to convert parts of its crypto mining facilities in Texas, Tennessee, and Washington state.

In a separate detail about capital allocation, Bitdeer “fully liquidat[ed] its Bitcoin treasury” to zero after holding roughly 943 BTC in early February, with executive Ross Gann saying the sales were made to help fund its broader expansion strategy.

Volta’s rollout timeline and stakes

Volta launched out of stealth and described itself as a fully vertically integrated AI infrastructure platform, with a $10bn strategic partnership with an unnamed “leading frontier AI lab” that is deployed in the first phase at Bitdeer’s campus in Norway.

Phase I is set to launch by the end of December 2026

Data Center Dynamics said Tydal will deliver 121MW of IT capacity supported by an estimated 133MW gross capacity, and that the campus will host Vera Rubin hardware from Nvidia.

The same source laid out a two-phase delivery schedule, with Phase I targeted to launch by the end of December 2026 and Phase II launching by the end of March 2027.

Bitdeer CFO Michael G. Potter said the project will incorporate “leading-edge Nvidia GPU technology and frontier models from a leading AI lab,” while Bitdeer also said it plans to deliver the contracted capacity in two equal-sized phases across four data halls.

TheEnergyMag reported that Volta’s Anthropic and Bitdeer contracts are separate agreements with different counterparties and durations, and it added that Volta can terminate its 16-year Bitdeer agreement without a fee after year 10, making execution and financing milestones central to what comes next.
